Following its announcement back in June, Huawei has officially launched the public beta for its new in-house software, HarmonyOS 6. This update appears to be the commercial release of what was known as HarmonyOS NEXT, the version of Huawei's operating system built entirely on its own kernel and free of its Android (AOSP) roots.
HarmonyOS 6 is headlined by a revamped design that includes updated animations, new lockscreen customization options, and optimized UI performance. The biggest change, however, is the deep integration of AI, with the new XiaoYi personal assistant being a key part of this. The assistant is described as a 'smart partner' that provides contextual information and can accomplish tasks on your behalf autonomously, including executing complex, multi-step tasks, organizing research, and offering a 'Sees the World' feature for visually impaired users.
Security also gets an AI boost, with the system featuring proactive anti-fraud protection to detect scam calls, including AI face-swap attempts. It also has an anti-peep feature that automatically hides sensitive content when it detects someone else looking at your screen. HarmonyOS 6 will also support file transfers between Huawei and Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Now, for the catch: this entire beta schedule is China-specific, as Huawei explicitly noted. The company has not yet announced a timeline for a global rollout of HarmonyOS 6, so users outside of mainland China will have to wait for further announcements.
