Xiaomi is slated to launch a direct successor to the Mi 11 Ultra that might also have a 50MP main rear camera. Now, a reliable leaker claims that this "12 Ultra" will come with not just 1 but 3 sensors of this resolution. This, apparently, will give the potential flagship secondary functions such as ultrawide-angle shooting at a top-quality resolution.

The Mi 11 Ultra is now projected to get a next generation with a slightly revised name, dropping the usual "Mi" tag to become the 12 Ultra (possibly worldwide). Now, the eminent tipster Digital Chat Station suggests that this is far from the only tweak the putative 2022 flagship will see compared to its forebear.

The existing model rocks the industry's best 50MP mobile sensor as the main camera in its powerful triple rear-mounted array. Its direct successor might equal it in this respect - as might the other 2 slated to join it. Digital Chat Station now asserts that the 12 Ultra will have primary, ultrawide-angle and periscope lenses, all of which will have the same resolution.

This rumored next-gen camera strategy of Xiaomi's gets more plausible in the face of ZTE's similar 2021 stunt, in which its flagship the Axon 30 Ultra launched with a triple camera array of an even higher resolution: 64MP.

This cumulative megapixel count may not have resulted in exactly unparalleled critical acclaim for the phone; then again, Huawei did recently take the general idea and tweak it to much better effect in the flagship P50 series.

Therefore, cranking zoom and ultrawide functions all the way up to 50MP might work out well for Xiaomi in the coming year. Then again, the former might have an optical level of 5x, as the OEM has reportedly tested a more advanced 10x module but ultimately found it unfeasible for the 12 Ultra's purposes.

Finally, these new Xiaomi flagship camera rumors might make sense of additional reports that the vanilla 12 or 12 Pro might get a newer 200MP main sensor instead. Triple-figure resolutions are often a gamble for smartphone OEMs, whereas triple arrays of lower-res, yet more established, image sensors will be a distinctly tried and tested strategy by the time the 12 Ultra is ready for launch.
