More details of Xiaomi's upcoming camera champ have surfaced. New information from a notable source heavily indicates that Samsung's latest 50 MP CMOS sensor, the ISOCELL GN5, could find its way to the Xiaomi 12 Ultra.

Xiaomi's next-gen flagship phones are on the way. The Chinese company will release the Xiaomi 12 at the end of the year, then add to the lineup with the Xiaomi 12 Pro and Xiaomi 12 Ultra after a few months. New leaks have now given more clues on what to expect from the line-leading Xiaomi 12 Ultra.

According to popular tipster Digital Chat Station, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will sport a triple 50 MP camera system. Samsung released two new premium CMOS sensors last week—the 200 MP ISOCELL HP1, and the 50 MP ISOCELL GN5. Both sensors are likely to make their way to the Xiaomi 12 series, but with different implementations.

Going by the source, it appears that the 200 MP HP1 will find use on the vanilla Xiaomi 12, while the 50 MP GN5 will be used on the Xiaomi 12 Ultra—but not as its main sensor. Instead, the GN5 could serve as the Ultra's ultra-wide camera. While the 1/1.57-inch GN5 is in the same series as the 1/1.12-inch GN2 used as the Mi 11 Ultra main shooter, it's a much smaller sensor, and looks intended to compete with Sony's IMX766 as the ultra-wide camera for future premium phones. It will also find use as the main camera of upcoming mid-range phones.
