Despite shuttering its smartphone division, LG remains committed to bringing OS updates to its smartphones. As we discussed last year, the company promised Android 12 and Android 13 to the LG Velvet and LG Wing, the final flagship smartphones that it released publicly. Incidentally, LG also created the Velvet 2 Pro, which it only gifted to some employees.
Predictably, LG continues to update its remaining smartphones at a glacial pace. According to a new software update plan, the company will begin updating the LG Velvet to Android 12, over five months after Google released the OS to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). By contrast, LG has not commented on the update status of the LG Wing, to which it recently updated to the February 2022 security patch.
Unfortunately, LG's software update plan only applies to devices sold in South Korea. Typically, LG takes several months to release OS updates outside its home market. Hence, it may be late summer before the LG Velvet receives Android 12 in Europe and North America. Similarly, it took LG until November 2021 to upgrade the LG Wing to Android 11 in South Korea. In other words, do not expect the LG Wing to see Android 12 until after Google releases Android 13 publicly.
