MediaTek is rumored to launch the Dimensity 2000 as its next-gen 5G flagship SoC. Now, the latest word on this chipset is that it might be announced prior to 2022 as a processor based on a 4 nanometer (nm) architecture, not to mention ARM v9. Therefore, it is now projected to offer a serious challenge to the likes of Qualcomm's own next top-end mobile processor.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1100 and 1200 are their maker's most premium mobile SoCs at the moment, and have some specs in common with others such as the Snapdragon 888. Nevertheless, they lack a certain edge (probably the ARM Cortex-X1 core) that often consigns them to the mid-range below their main competitor in terms of performance.

However, MediaTek is also expected to launch a 'real' flagship chipset that might even get an X2 core and, thus, give the 888's own successor (currently thought to launch as the 898) a much better run for its money. This "Dimensity 2000" had been rumored to have an advanced 5nm architecture; however, the latest rumor hints it might go directly to 4nm instead.

The "2000" is also now predicted to adopt ARM's latest v9 architecture, which might give it an edge in some areas, such as AI power. The processor was thought not to get here in any form until 2022. Now, however, the latest reports suggest MediaTek just might be ready to announce the Dimensity 2000, or sample it out to potential clients at the least, by the end of 2021.
