A new rumour states that the MediaTek Dimensity is up to 25% more power-efficient than the Snapdragon 898. Both chipsets are slated to share an identical core configuration (1xCortex-X2 + 3xCortex-A710 + 4xCortex-A510), but the Dimensity 1200 will use an ARM Mali G79 GPU.

Although the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 offers marginal upgrades over its predecessor, it isn't the 'true' Dimensity 1000 successor. That is slated to arrive in the form of the MediaTek Dimensity 2000 sometime in late 2021 or early 2022. Conflicting reports suggest that it could use TSMC's 5nm or 4nm process node. Regardless of its transistor size, the chipset is slated to bring forth a host of improvements and could even give the Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 a run for its money.

A report from MyDrivers suggests that the Dimensity 2000 is 25% more power-efficient than the Snapdragon 898. It is hardly surprising, given that the latter is fabbed on Samsung's 4nm node, which doesn't quite hold up to its TSMC equivalent. Furthermore, the report adds that the Dimensity 2000 could be as fast as the Snapdragon 898 in terms of raw performance.

The Dimensity 2000 is also rumoured to be the first MediaTek chipset to pack ARM's shiny new Cortex-X2 CPU core. It will likely be accompanied by Cortex-A710 and A-510 cores in a cluster configuration similar to the Snapdragon 898, i.e. 1xCortex-X1 + 3xCortex-A710 + 4xCortex-A510. Lastly, an ARM Mali G79 will handle the graphics processing side of things. Historically, ARM's GPUs have fallen behind their Qualcomm counterparts, and it'll be interesting to see if things are any different this time around.

MediaTek chipsets, even the high-end ones, have historically been one generation behind Qualcomm hardware. For the first time in many years, MediaTek has a real shot at trading blows with Qualcomm's flagship offerings, at least in terms of CPU performance. The Dimensity 2000 could even give the Exynos 2200 a run for its money, but it will almost certainly fall flat in gaming performance due to the latter's mRDNA2 GPU.
