A new turn-based take on the Ninja Turtles franchise will be released in May this year on Steam. And from the looks of things, it will tell one of the more depressing stories involving the mutated reptiles. In a universe where Shredder and Splinter have kicked the bucket, the Turtles, now approaching adulthood, are going through their emo phase.
They fight enemies and each other as they slowly grow apart. Meanwhile, in Shredder's absence, the Foot Clan has been taken over by a new leader, who, as expected, is wreaking havoc on the city. This is reflected in the gameplay as the 20 or so levels are meant to "showcase each Turtle individually."
The twist is that these levels are rapidly mutating and changing with each turn, adding new sections, enemies, and encounters to keep you on your toes.
The aesthetics fall between a graphic novel and a board game with action figurines representing the Turtles and the enemies. The animations are very simplistic and lack any character movements. Instead, they move like a figure on a board game. It's not particularly inspired and looks very dated. To be fair, this style has been pulled off successfully in the past with games like Hitman GO or Lara Croft GO, so here's hoping they polish it up a bit more before launch.
The developers Strange Scaffold have proven themselves before with great games like El Paso, Elsewhere, and I Am Your Beast, so it does look like the game is in good hands. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown releases on May 22nd.
