BYD is not standing still as it assaults Tesla’s premier position on two fronts on the same day. All eyes will be on its Shenzhen headquarters on March 17 as the Chinese automaker unveils the Super e-Platform, its ultra-fast charging solution that juices up batteries twice as fast as Tesla’s world-acclaimed Superchargers. It will also open the pre-order books on two new EVs.
The Super e-Platform can supply up to 1,000 kW to capable EVs, and BYD boasts it will replenish batteries as fast as you could put fuel in a fossil fuel-powered car. The event invite states, “The BYD Super e-Platform will use disruptive technology to completely solve the biggest headache in EV use.”
BYD’s new chargers can theoretically fill a 100 kWh battery in just 10 minutes. They will conveniently outperform the fastest public chargers currently delivering up to 500 kW, including Tesla’s V4 Superchargers.
BYD will also start pre-orders on the electric Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, which were revealed in January. With both models closely linked with the new chargers, it is safe to assume to have the tech to support the Super e-Platform.
Specs-wise, the Han L and Tang L have dual motors peaking at 810 kW. They can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and 3.9 seconds, respectively.
