BYD has finally brought the Dolphin Surf to Europe with a launch in Berlin, Germany. The electric hatchback is joining the fray of affordable EVs across the continent.
The Dolphin Surf has three front-wheel drive (FWD) trims. The base model (Active) starts at $26,100 and offers a driving range (WLTP) of 137 miles with a 30 kWh battery and a 65 kW motor. BYD is discounting the Active to $22,700 until the end of June.
The Boost trim has a 43.2 kWh battery, which BYD says will last up to 200 miles between charges. It has a 65 kW motor and will sell for a discounted price of $26,500. The most expensive trim is the Comfort, with the same battery size and a driving range of 193 miles (up to 315 miles under city driving conditions). Its single electric motor produces 115 kW, and it will cost about $29,000 before the end of June.
The Dolphin Surf charges from 30 to 80 percent on DC power in 22 minutes. It has 11 kW of onboard AC charging.
On the inside, the hatchback has a 10.1-inch touchscreen that can be turned. Other features include wireless phone charging, cup holders, and backseats that fold to expand the boot space from 316 L to 1,037 L.
The Dolphin Surf’s budget-friendly competitors include the Renault 58, Volkswagen ID.3, and Dacia Spring.
BYD also revealed it is revamping its European operations. It plans to penetrate 12 new markets and increase sales locations to over 1,000.
