Deal | Sylvox 43-inch waterproof 4K TV now shipping for US$999 with IP55 certification and integrated Android TV
The Sylvox OT43A2KGGC is a sturdy 43-inch television for outdoor environments or social areas like yards, patios, restaurants, or bars. Thus, the TV has been specifically designed to withstand rain, sunlight, dust, and other damaging elements in comparison to a typical indoor television. The manufacturer has sent us a sample unit for our honest impressions.
Core specifications:
- 3840 x 2160 (4K) resolution, 16:9, 60 Hz
- 3x HDMI (4K@60), 2x USB-A, 3.5 mm headset, Optical-out, RJ-45, TV Antenna, AC power
- 38.4 x 22.56 x 3.45 inches
- 400 x 200 mm VESA mount
- -30 C to 50 C operating temperature
- 40.1 lbs
Unlike a standard TV, the Sylvox is quite heavy due to its rigid metal build. All of its ports along the rear are protected behind a metal plate secured by 13 Phillips screws to prevent water seepage or accidental disconnects. The ports are therefore a chore to access since the metal plate must first be removed with a screwdriver. We do, however, appreciate that there is no external power brick.
The integrated Android TV software is generally smooth and the included remote is both clicky and responsive. Nonetheless, expect frame skips when navigating through the UI and longer load times than a typical smartphone. The remote does not have backlit buttons, either.
We're able to measure a maximum brightness in the 700 to 800-nit range against the advertised maximum of 1000 nits, but higher-end models from the manufacturer can go up to 1500 or 2000 nits. 700 nits is still brighter than the displays on most laptops and it is sufficient if the TV is positioned under shade. If not, then an even brighter display is recommended for better viewing under direct sunlight.
Contrast ratio is quite good at just over 1000:1.

* ... smaller is better
The TV is actively cooled and so there is always audible fan noise when the unit is powered on. Surface temperature hot spots would remain relatively cool at under 30 C after an hour of usage.
Black-white and gray-gray response times are faster than on many Ultrabooks. They're not as fast as the displays on high-end gaming laptops, but they're still good enough for comfortable gaming and no distracting ghosting.
A pulse-width modulation of 300 Hz is present on all brightness levels up to 99 percent. Luckily, viewers are less likely to notice any flickering when in outdoor conditions.
The screen does not come pre-calibrated since color accuracy is generally not a top priority for outdoor TVs. Color temperature in particular is cooler than expected as shown by our CalMAN measurements below. Even so, colors are still relatively deep at approximately 95 percent of sRGB or ~72 percent NTSC.
The brightness setting greatly impacts power consumption. The Sylvox would draw just 36 W when on the minimum brightness setting up to 110 W when on maximum.
The internal 20 W stereo speakers (10 W x2) are a mixed bag. While they are very loud at around 95 dB(A) to be perfect for outdoor scenarios, they are down-firing instead of front-firing. Thus, simply placing the TV on a table will block the speaker grilles and muffle the volume. It's clear that the manufacturer designed its TV sets to be wall-mounted.
The model utilizes an RGBW subpixel array instead of the more common RGB. RGBW generally allows for brighter screens albeit at the cost of clarity along hard edges. This is most noticeable when displaying black text against a white background as the black text will not appear as sharp. For video content, however, the disadvantages of RGBW are much harder to see. We think the tradeoff is reasonable considering the target outdoor scenarios of this particular TV.
The Sylvox 43-inch outdoor TV maximizes functionality while maintaining many of the lucrative features of an indoor television like Android TV, HDR, and 4K. Image quality in particular is excellent with deeper black levels and faster response times than initially expected.
A few aspects could be improved upon such as the suboptimal positioning of the speakers and hard-to-access ports. Perhaps a waterproof plate with latches instead of screws could be more user-friendly for port access. Meanwhile, the Android TV software could have been smoother in terms of loading and frame skips.
The 43-inch Sylvox television is now shipping for $999 USD with larger sizes available as well.
