Announced just a couple of months ago, the Dynabook Portege X30W-J convertible is now an official Intel Evo laptop. The certification guarantees users a handful of high-end features including an 11th gen Tiger Lake CPU, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, integrated Thunderbolt 4, up to 16 hours of battery life, and other characteristics. The Intel Evo platform is essentially a checklist of features that laptops must follow if they want to earn the "Evo" certification as detailed here.

The Portege X30W-J is Dynabook's latest flagship 2-in-1 subnotebook in contrast to the lower-end Tecra series of laptops. It's notable for being one of the lightest 13.3-inch 2-in-1 laptops with its starting weight of just 989 grams. The competing Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, for example, is noticeably heavier at 1.3 kg.

The system is now shipping for a starting price of $1550 USD. We'll have to see what sacrifices, if any, were necessary to reach such a low weight when we review the system next month.

After graduating with a B.S. in environmental hydrodynamics from the University of California, I studied reactor physics to become licensed by the U.S. NRC to operate nuclear reactors. There's a striking level of appreciation you gain for everyday consumer electronics after working with modern nuclear reactivity systems astonishingly powered by computers from the 80s.
