In Immortals of Aveum, players step into the role of Jak, a young mage who joins the Immortals – an elite force of battle-hardened sorcerers. To prevent the collapse of the war-ravaged world of Aveum, players dive into fast-paced, cinematic combat. While the gameplay follows the structure of classic shooters, spells replace bullets. As a Triarch Magnus, Jak can wield all three types of magic at once: red for explosive power, blue for precision and control, and green for speed and debuffs.
Immortals of Aveum delivers dynamic battles where success depends not only on quick reflexes and clever dodging, but also on the tactical use of different types of magic. A range of gear lets players tailor their spells to suit their own playstyle. However, some critics note that the combat system only starts to shine later in the game. Rather than including a multiplayer mode, Immortals of Aveum focuses entirely on its story-driven, cinematic campaign.
Innovative concept with a weak start
At launch, the German games magazine PCGames reviewed Immortals of Aveum and praised its fresh concept and enjoyable combat system. The richly crafted fantasy world also earned positive mentions. However, the magic shooter faced criticism due to technical issues, such as unstable frame rates, and a lackluster first half of the game. The low difficulty early on made many mechanics feel underwhelming, with enemies posing little challenge. Despite these shortcomings, PCGames gave the game a solid 7 out of 10.
Immortals of Aveum was developed by Ascendant Studios in partnership with publisher Electronic Arts and released in August 2023. Since then, it has gathered around 2,000 reviews on Steam, with 72% of players giving it a positive rating. On Metacritic, the reception has been more mixed, with a Metascore of 69 and a User Score of 6.1.
