Instead of releasing a Gen 4 Starlink router, SpaceX filled a gap in its device offering by releasing a Starlink Mini router to go with its respective compact and highly mobile dish. It will be sold concurrently with Starlink's other routers, for those who want extended range on a budget.

The mysterious new Starlink router schematics that leaked not long ago and were thought to be part of a Gen 4 equipment kit have now materialized in the form of an unexpected Starlink Mini Router device.

The compact new router from Starlink carries the UTR-251 model name and is designed to go with the $500 Mini dish kit to extend its Wi-fi range compared to the integrated router it carries.

It can also be used concurrently with other routers like the current Gen 3 unit that ships with the Standard dish kit in a Starlink Mesh configuration that sets one unit per every other room in a larger home for faster and more reliable Wi-fi signal coverage.

Starlink Router Mini price and specs

  • $40
  • Wi-fi 6 dual-band
  • 2x2 2.4 GHz and 2x3 5 GHz MU-MIMO
  • WPA2 security
  • -22°F to +122°F (-30°C to +50°C) operating temperature
  • 1500 square feet coverage area
  • Mesh compatible with Starlink Mini, Gen 3 and Gen 2 routers

The Mini router costs just $40 at the Starlink US store, with availability in other countries or regions coming at a later date, says SpaceX:

At this time, the Starlink Router Mini is available for purchase only in the United States through the Starlink Shop. If the Router Mini is not listed, it means the product is currently unavailable in your region. We will provide updates on its broader release, so stay tuned!

The low pricing makes it suitable for a Starlink Mesh network configuration in larger houses, continues the description, while on its own it is suitable for households that don't need that much capacity. It is "a great fit for smaller spaces, homes with more basic WiFi needs, or to cover dead spots within a home," says Starlink.

On the go, the new compact router can extend the Wi-fi range of a Starlink Mini dish, whose integrated solution leaves something to be desired in that respect, too. For all other intents and purposes, like "households with multiple people working, streaming, or gaming at home, or for multi-unit properties and homes with more than one building," Starlink recommends going with the Gen 3 router.

At $40 a pop, however, the new Starlink Mini router makes for a great range extender at home or on the go, so it will likely prove rather popular if the initial pricing holds.
