With multiple 2.5 Gb Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi 7 and software that includes Docker, Tailscale, Wireguard and Adblock, the GL-iNet Flint 3 will give even the best routers a run for their money at a significantly reduced price.

GL-iNet has a reputation for producing highly competitive, highly functional routers that are based on open source software and have strong VPN features out of the box. To get an idea of what their routers are capable of, we took an in depth look at their previous model, the Flint 2 (MT6000)

One of the most significant benefits of GL-iNets routers is the OpenWRT implementation. Their firmware is based on OpenWRT but includes an overhaul of the interface, making it more user-friendly. However, stock versions of OpenWRT can be installed through the in built update tool without any modification to the router. You still get all the software goodies, including built in support for Tailscale, AdGuard, Wireguard, OpenVPN, TOR and a free DDNS service. Flint routers also include 8 GB of eMMC storage, allowing you to install a range of additional plugins, including Docker.

However, their latest model, the Flint 3 (BE9300) takes the winning software features of the Flint 2, and adds some significant upgrades to the hardware.

The Flint 3 now comes with Wi-Fi 7, quoting a theoretical throughput of 5765 Mbps on the 6 GHz band. To support the additional wireless bandwidth, the Flint 3 now comes with five 2.5 Gb Ethernet ports (as opposed to 2 on the outgoing model), supporting network aggregation up to 10 Gbps.

The router is equipped with the same 1 GB DDR4 RAM, but this time opts for an unspecified Qualcomm quad-core chip clocked at 1.5 GHz. This may or may not be an upgrade over the 2.0 GHz quad-core MediaTek chip in the old model.

Aside from the outstanding software and hardware suite, the best thing about the Flint 3 right now is the price. Unfortunately, the super early bird pricing has already been claimed, which would have netted you a Flint 3 at $119, but the early bird and pre-order campaigns still have units available at $139 and $159 respectively (MSRP $229). Not a bad deal considering the Flint 2 (available on Amazon) retails for $159 and the closest competitor, the ASUS RT-BE86U (available on Amazon) with multiple 2.5 Gb Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi 7 retails for $269.

Pre-orders are open now, with shipping expected in Mid-July 2025.
