StarCraft to return as open-world shooter in 2030

Diablo V was not the only major announcement made at BlizzCon 2026. A new StarCraft game is also in the works, but it represents a significant departure from the franchise’s real-time strategy roots. Simply titled StarCraft, the project appears to be an open-world shooter and was unveiled with a cinematic trailer rather than gameplay footage. The announcement confirms long-running reports that Blizzard is developing a shooter set in the StarCraft universe.
The trailer focuses on the training and preparation of a Terran Dominion Space Marine. Arcturus Mengsk can be heard in a voiceover, delivering an inspirational speech before the soldier eventually has a grisly encounter with the Zerg. While the footage provides some indication of the setting and tone, Blizzard is keeping quiet on the gameplay details. The project is also notable given the franchise’s history with canceled shooters, including StarCraft: Ghost and the later Project Ares.
Blizzard has not announced platforms, only confirming a 2030 target, meaning fans face a lengthy wait. A PC release seems likely, though console availability remains unconfirmed.
