Spotify Car Thing will no longer be a thing at the end of this year
Spotify is killing Car Thing, the device that allowed drivers to stream music from the service in cars that don't come with modern entertainment systems. It was first introduced in April 2021 but was only available on an invite-only basis. The streaming giant later put it on public sale in February 2022.
However, Spotify Car Thing went out of production in just five months. The company said that it went out of production mainly because of "product demand and supply chain issues." However, the streaming giant said that the "existing devices will perform as intended." Well, it seems that will no longer be the case later this year.
Spotify has just announced that it will be "discontinuing Car Thing," and it will stop working on December 9th, 2024. The streaming giant says that this will enable them "to focus on developing new features and enhancements" that aim to offer a better experience to all users.
As for those who are still relying on Car Thing, Spotify recommends doing a factory reset before December 9th, 2024. After that, the streaming company asks you to contact a local waste disposal department and hand it over for recycling. There's no mention of the company offering any refund to the current users either.
For what the Spotify Car Thing could do, it was a good first attempt at streamlining the music experience in non-modern vehicles. So, it goes without saying that seeing it getting bricked like this is really disappointing. If you're looking for a replacement, you can check out the Westods wireless car receiver on Amazon. It's compatible with Android Auto and CarPlay.
