foobar2000 Mobile 1.5 now available with new skin format support
Released in 2002 by former Nullsoft employee Peter Pawłowski, who was in charge of Winamp plugin development, foobar2000 is an audiophile-focused freeware audio player now available for Windows, iOS, Android, and macOS. The first mobile versions arrived in May 2016. This Monday, foobar2000 Mobile 1.5 launched for both iOS and Android users.
The essential change that is common to both players is the introduction of a new skin format that can be easily edited using commonly available tools. At the same time, old skins are still working without having to do anything special. The list of changes for both platforms also includes a picture viewer that can be used to view album headers and skin cover art, as well as chapter support for OGG files. The changelog for the latest versions can be seen on this page (iOS) and this page (Android).
At the time of publishing, the 1.5.1 minor update was not available for iOS. The Android version got the update on May 22nd, with just two changes mentioned in the official changelog page mentioned above. The changes mentioned are a crash regression fix and "Icon resource cleaned up" and might not be necessary for the iOS version. The latest desktop version for Windows and ARM is labeled 2.1.5 and was released nearly three weeks ago. The macOS build is now at 2.6.4, which was also unleashed in early May.
Fans of high-end audio experiences will most likely find Robert Harley's The Complete Guide to High-End Audio interesting. This book is currently 31% off on Amazon and can be acquired for $34.37 instead of $49.95.
