Reviews for the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium

88.1% Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium Smartphone Review | Notebookcheck
The Xperia XZ2 Premium is Sony’s second attempt at a flagship device under its Xperia XZ series. The XZ2 Premium has a true Ultra-HD display, great audio features, a bright dual rear-facing camera setup and plenty of other notable features too. Find out in this detailed review for whom this bulk smartphone is best suited.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium throws everything but the kitchen sink into its bulky body. It’s a highly accomplished device by most technical standards, but it simply doesn’t hang together as a friction-free, pleasant-to-use smartphone. Which should surely be the bare minimum requirement for a 2018 flagship.

There's no doubt that the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium has some interesting things to offer. It namely has a 4K HDR display and excellent rear cameras which can record 4K HDR video, as well as taking excellent photographs.

Sony's finally come up with a dual camera, and the high-res color module plus the high-sensitivity monochrome one makes for a versatile setup that puts out pretty great images. The 4K display remains unique to Xperia Premiums some three years since the first one, so it probably is a bit overkill, though it does make for nice headlines.

No, at $1,000 it’s tough to justify buying the XZ2 Premium. Unless you desperately want to film in 4K HDR or often find yourself filming in low light, this phone doesn’t do enough for its high price tag, and it’s not pleasurable to use.

A closer look at the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium’s dual cameras in low-light
Source: Hardware Zone English Archive.org version
These days, a flagship smartphone’s camera has to deliver so much more to be worth its price tag. It’ll be interesting to see what Sony has up its sleeve for the camera on its upcoming Xperia XZ3, which, curiously enough, might have a single camera setup.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium – The True Xperia Flagship [Review]
Source: G Style Magazine English Archive.org version
The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium is a fantastically capable device. It’s top tier specs mean that pretty much any app or game you throw at it will run super smoothly and this also goes for the phone itself. It starts up almost immediately and there’s barely any lag when activating the camera from sleep. This is seriously one quick device that will make almost any hardcore user happy.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium has a 5.8-inch IPS LCD 4k display with a 3,840 x 2,160 pixels resolution (~765ppi). However, it's also one of the biggest and heaviest phones out there, measuring 158 x 80 x 11.9 mm and weighing 236g.

76% Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium review: Too quirky for the mainstream
Source: Engadget English Archive.org version
The Xperia XZ2 Premium is a capable phone that lasts all day, but most of its standout features are either unnecessary or incredibly niche. It’s also very expensive and very slippery. Most people will be better served by another flagship Android phone.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium's 4K HDR display is nice, and its cameras take solid shots in low light. But this $999 phone can't match the iPhone X, Galaxy S9, OnePlus 6 or Pixel 2.

Even though it’s not quite a home run, the XZ2 Premium is yet another step in the right direction for Sony. The new innovations here will definitely help to shed some light back onto Sony, but it’s going to need to go the extra mile the next time around to truly get more attention. At the end of the day, it’s still good enough to compete against some of the greats out in the space right now.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium hands-on review
Source: GSM Arena English Archive.org version
We'll be doing more proper testing once a finalized unit of the Xperia XZ2 Premium comes our way. Battery life, performance, image quality - all these things should be examined on a retail-ready device, but we still jumped at the opportunity for an early look at what this device is capable of.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium First Impressions [Review – Part 1]
Source: G Style Magazine English Archive.org version
So if we’re keeping track, Sony technically has three flagships right now – The Xperia XZ2 Compact, the Xperia XZ2, and the Xperia XZ2 Premium. The latter is the true flagship and powerhouse, though the first two are no slouches. Mainly they just lack that second camera, the 4K display, and don’t quite have as much RAM. However, they are cheaper and come in slightly more manageable size. They can also pretty much do everything the XZ2 Premium can do.

Comment

Model: The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium not only has a 4K HDR display, but it's also one of the first phones that can record videos at that resolution and dynamic range. It's also the first Xperia to sport dual rear cameras and, like its predecessors, comes with two front-facing speakers and shoots super-slow-motion clips. It is aimed at users who require a good camera on their smartphone, including bloggers, photographers, or travelers. Although Sony impresses with the XZ2 Premium’s video abilities, the overall package doesn’t measure up to its high price tag. Sony finally introduced a new design motif earlier this year called Ambient Flow, which is meant to accentuate the curves on its phones, making them more ergonomic to hold. However, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium doesn’t have an ultra-slim screen surround and is very wide and thick. 11.9 mm at its middle, it heads towards twice the thickness of an iPhone X. This phone does not have a gigantic battery or military spec ruggedization. It’s just unusually thick and heavy. The XZ2 Premium's 5.8-inch 4K HDR display is quite lovely. It's bright, colorful and crisp. But the screen appears to have an odd blue cast by default. A user can pick from Standard, Professional or Super Vivid or go into the white-balance settings to further fine-tune the colors. On paper, the IPS LCD 5.8-inch screen supports HDR, has a 3,840 x 2,160 4K resolution, as well as a 16:9 aspect ratio.

The XZ2 Premium is powered by the same processor inside its two smaller siblings, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip, but it comes with 6 GB of RAM. There is absolutely no trouble with performance on this device. Apps open instantly, moving around the operating system is fast. Users will be able to run almost any intensive app or service on this phone. The highlight of the Xperia XZ2 Premium is its camera, particularly with video, but let’s start with stills. The rear dual-camera system which is a first for Sony houses a 19-megapixel f/1.8 lens and a 12-megapixel monochrome lens with a f/1.6 aperture. It can capture up to 51200 ISO for photos and 12800 ISO for videos, which means it should be able to perform well in low-light conditions. In good lighting, the camera can take well-detailed photos with good color accuracy, and the camera shutter is fast to react. There is a good deal of bloatware, most of which user can’t uninstall but only disable, which is annoying. And there are also a handful of Sony apps such as 3D Creator, where users can create 3D images of objects. Users can send these off to a 3D printer to build or simply share these images on Facebook. It’s neat, but it’s a feature we’d forget about after trying it once. The Xperia Assist can trigger several phone features based on time of day or events. For example, the Good Night action automatically turns on the blue light filter and Do Not Disturb at a time range the user sets. Users can choose exactly what they want on or off, making it quite handy.

Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

Qualcomm Adreno 630: Integrated graphics card in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. According to Qualcomm 30% faster than the old Adreno 540 in the Snapdragon 835 with 30% less power consumption.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

SD 845: High-end SoC for smartphones that was introduced in early 2018 and manufactured in 10 nm LPP FinFET at TSMC. Integrates 4x Kryo 385 cores (Cortex-A75) at up to 2.8 GHz (max) for performance and 4x Kryo 385 at 1.8 GHz (max) for efficiency. Furthermore offers an X20 LTE modem, ac-WiFi and a dual-channel 32-Bit 1866 MHz LPDDR4x memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

5.80":

It is a very small display format for smartphones. You should by no means be mis-sighted and you will generally see very little on the screen and only have a small resolution available. In return, the device should be very small and handy.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.

74.32%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
