For the uninitiated, asking almost US$1,000 for a 2021 phone is exactly why Sony and its Xperia line have almost vanished from smartphone sales charts. But the Xperia PRO-I was never meant to rival best-sellers from Samsung and Apple; it was made by a company that is world-renowned for its imaging knowhow for those willing to pay up for a phone with a 1-inch image sensor. In addition, it’s worth remembering that the Sony Xperia PRO-I was released with the truly eye-watering launch price of US$1,799.99.

While there have been some whispers that such a price cut could indicate the imminent arrival of the Sony Xperia PRO-I 2 (or Mark 2), it appears that this discount is only for customers in the US at the moment. The tipster states “variable aperture 1-inch main camera + full-focal light variable telephoto + 4K60 front + CineVlog 4K” as features likely to be included, which is hardly shocking when you consider the impressive specs of the 2021 Xperia PRO-I. 16 GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor would seem like the most obvious key upgrades for a 2023 Xperia PRO-I model, along with professional-grade camera software and an astonishing price point.
