Reviews for the Sony Xperia XZ2
Everything in HDR. HDR is the key term for Sony's new high-end smartphone Xperia XZ2: The display supports HDR 10 and is able to upscale content to HDR, while the camera can record videos in HDR. Can this be seen as a real innovation? Have they done enough to compete on the market?

Sony has removed the design shackles it had laden itself with over recent years to produce a phone in the Sony Xperia XZ2 that now looks better than it ever has, comes equipped with some standout hardware and features (it's the first phone on the market to deliver 4K, HDR recording), and is technically just as powerful if not more so than rival devices. Those bezels are still there though, despite being reduced, and it remains the more head-not-heart choice out of the Android flagships.

The Xperia XZ2 is not the fastest device when it comes to starting the Android operating system even after an upgrade to version 9. However performance speed was fine during normal smartphone operations. Although, as I have already mentioned, it is quite easy to interrupt tasks because your finger accidentally comes into contact with the side-mounted buttons.

It isn’t all bad news; the Xperia XZ2 is Sony’s best flagship smartphone since the much-lauded Xperia Z2. Sony will hopefully build on the XZ2’s foundations with the launch of the Xperia XZ3 during IFA 2018 in Berlin which is widely rumored to feature a whopping 48MP sensor.

The Xperia XZ2's Ambient Flow design (except the rear fingerprint sensor) really wowed us, while camera quality along with the processor and battery's horsepower are satisfactory. It could have been quite a good purchase if it wasn't for the gimmicky features.

The Xperia XZ2 package itself is a good one. You have a good camera on the back, a solid spec sheet for 2018, and hardware that doesn’t look like it’s from the earlier part of this decade. I am glad this is the the first Sony device I’ve used in a while because the company did a great job here.

The Xperia XZ2 may be a fresh new start for Sony, but when you compare it to other Android smartphones, it doesn't feel like one. Chunky bezels, and a thick and heavy design make the XZ2 feel like a much older phone. Questionable design decisions, like the poorly positioned fingerprint scanner and power button, also detract from the user experience.

With that said, the Sony Xperia XZ2 is currently one of the best devices you can get if you’re a serious PS4 player and mobile gamer. It has all the latest flagship specs, can use a real PlayStation 4 Dualshock 4 controller wirelessly, and has fantastic audio to boot. I’m glad to see that Sony is continuing on with their support for PS4 Remote Play on their flagship Xperia devices and it’s honestly one of the main reasons why Sony’s Xperia line still intrigues me. Without it, the Xperia XZ2 would be lost in a sea of next gen smartphones.

The Sony XPERIA XZ2 marks a shift with a fresh new curved design from Sony. Launched in Barcelona during MWC 2018, this phone is now available in the U.S, and it has a few tricks up its sleeves. It has strong video-recording capabilities, including 960 FPS slow-motion in 1080p and it is the first phone in the world to record in 4K HDR. The front speakers have been included to provide a powerful sound during multimedia activities, and the new Dynamic Vibration system should give an extra dimension to the experience.

While I didn’t talk about specs in my initial impressions, lets just they’re pretty good. The Xperia uses the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chip with 4GB or RAM, expandable memory, Android 8.0 Oreo, a 3180mAh battery, and it’s water resistant. I’ll get more indepth on the specs in the full review, but for now I’ll just leave you with that.

Think about the price, too. Sony’s flagship is $800, but the Galaxy S9 and Pixel 2 are less expansive. The OnePlus 6 is also hundreds of dollars cheaper. Sony is living a false reality. Samsung, Apple, and Google are in a league of their own, and the Xperia XZ2 is being forced to fight their flagships when it just doesn’t belong.

However, no smartphone is deemed perfect as the Japanese company has missed on quite a few opportunities to cater to loyal fans and curious buyers alike. Despite contingency measures, the absence of a direct audio jack in the device to preserve its aesthetics would throw off a few people who prefer direct wired connections. There’s also the dilemma of a hybrid dual-SIM slot and the presence of still uninstallable apps that are there with the device since day zero.

If you can see past its idiosyncrasies, the Xperia XZ2 is one of the most capable Android phones on the market, with loads of power, a solid if not class-leading camera, and a long-lasting battery bolstered by smart software that aims to keep the device humming along longer than its competitors. It's the kind of improvement Sony desperately needed to make with its high-end phone line, giving consumers another solid option to Samsung, Google and LG devices.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 finds itself in a bit of a predicament thanks to it's competition from Huawei and Samsung.

The redesigned shape and styling of Sony's flagship Xperia XZ2 handset will appeal to some, but I found it slippy to hold and prone to wriggling around on the desk. The camera promises much, but it's tricky to get the most out of 4K video or the super slow-motion mode. The Dynamic Vibration System is something of a mystery to me, and I found it uninspiring. Sony's insistence on including non-removable third-party apps is irritating. Finally, battery life is underwhelming.

The Xperia XZ2 has a number of desirable characteristics, but it's far from perfect. All that glass looks and feels beautiful, even if the fingerprint reader placement is a little off. I really wanted this phone to be a true, worthy alternative to the hugely prevalent iPhones and Galaxy S-series phones. Perhaps it would have been, had Sony priced it lower than it did, but as it is, the Xperia XZ2 stands a step behind its rivals. Still, if you like it, then go ahead and get one! With all said and done, we won't pretend the Xperia XZ2 and its little sibling are just your regular old next-generation flagship releases. Sony's major redesign is a fact. Whether or not "Ambient Flow" sticks around and retains its rounded shapes and forms might just depend on the success of the XZ2 pair. It is still way too early to make any viable predictions in that regard, and the truth is, long-time Sony fans and newcomers to the Xperia realm, alike, have to make their peace with the design one way or another. A distinctly individual decision, if we ever saw one.

The XZ2 Compact misses out on one other feature - its larger sibling introduces what Sony calls “Dynamic Vibration System” which basically triggers the phone’s vibrator based on the sound in games and videos and even music, like force feedback in a game controller. You can adjust the intensity at any time. We tried it and found it to be extremely gimmicky. It can actually be distracting when you’re absorbed in watching something, and we imagine it would get uncomfortable very quickly if we were holding the phone while listening to music. We don’t think this will become a must-have feature anytime soon.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 has many elements we've wanted to see for years: a bold new design, powerful innards and innovation inside. However, it's still got a bezel-heavy front, despite packing the new 18:9 screen, and some of the design choices are a touch questionable.
