Reviews for the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro

Beaten by the more recent Mi 9 but not out of the running yet, Mi 8 Pro offers phenomenal value at £299 from eBuyer. And now that Xiaomi phones are easily available in the UK, there's no reason not to consider it. With powerful performance, decent cameras, some genuinely useful software, a fancy in-display fingerprint sensor and a cool transparent back cover, this is a great all-rounder at a fantastic price.

When the Mi 9 is officially on sale in the UK we will have a new Xiaomi phone champion, but in the meantime the £499 Mi 8 Pro is an incredible buy, undercutting every rival flagship phone in the UK. Now that Xiaomi phones are easily available in the UK, there's no reason not to consider it.

We've admired Xiaomi phones for some time, and now the rest of the UK will get a look in too. This Mi 8 Pro is the best of Xiaomi and, we think, as good as any other flagship phone on the market - even those costing double the price.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is packed with all the things that we liked about the Mi 8, but aside from a stylish transparent glass finish and a minor RAM bump, it doesn't really earn its "Pro" moniker. Yet, if you can look past the unreliable in-display fingerprint sensor and the inconsistent MIUI 10, there's still a very good phone underneath with a surprisingly low price tag.

The Mi 8 Pro is a superb device for Xiaomi to make its UK arrival with, packing incredible specs and design into a bundle that undercuts most flagship phones out there by hundreds of pounds.

Xiaomi makes its bow in the UK with the Mi 8 Pro and we came away impressed. This is a phone that's got a lot going for it in terms of performance and camera quality, though other aspects of the phone are more satisfactory rather than sensational. The price is enough to tempt anyone looking for flagship specs at a mid-range price, however.

I have to say, the whole design of the interface just fits. It works well as a single offering – no disjointed feel – it’s a phone and interface which connects and delivers. From the notification shade, to the settings, to the design elements that flow all the way through this phone – it’s done with a style and an attention to detail that I really appreciated. Top job.

Now for a video test, and I have given the zoom a bit of a try here too. It got a bit wobbly because I was at maximum zoom (not something you’d normally do in video) but there was a lot of image stabilization going on and it worked very well.

Other specs include dual-band WiFi, DLNA, Bluetooth 5.0 and a trick dual-band GPS system that stops that madness when the signal is bouncing off buildings. There’s NFC and there’s an IR face detection system that’ll unlock the screen, even in the dark, by recognising your face.

If Xiaomi offered the Mi 8 Pro a few months ago and asked us if you should buy it, we would immediately say yes without hesitation. But it’s quite a different situation now, thanks to the local availability of its closest rival, the OnePlus 6T. It’s one of those rare situations where Xiaomi doesn’t have a huge pricing edge over its competitor, as the OnePlus 6T has roughly the same specs and comes with a sticker price of Php 33,990 for the 8GB/128GB variant, which is only Php 1,000 more than the Mi 8 Pro’s Php 32,990 price tag.

Xiaomi has been consistent in producing powerful smartphones at reasonable price tags. They have been more conscious of the design equally with the Mi 8 Pro, and that is great. It performs smoothly and provides excellent photos and videos that you can store in its 128GB storage. Also, enjoy the in-display fingerprint scanner and of course the transparent back that is a sure head-turner, making people think twice about buying something else.

Xiaomi's Mi 8 Pro is a competent flagship-class smartphone that should give other vendors operating in the £400-£500 price band pause for thought. This sector was competitive before Xiaomi showed up, and it's even more competitive now.

While there are some flagship measures against which the Mi 8 Pro won't stand - it's launching into a competitive space and Xiaomi's challenge is to convince you to buy its hardware over a OnePlus or Huawei - it delivers power and performance, combined with a lot of functionality at a fair price point.

Assessing which of these three Xiaomi phones is the best really depends on what you need. The Mi 8 Pro is technically the best, with the best specification and the fastest performance and highest amount of memory and storage out of the box, but the Mi 8 Lite is significantly cheaper and has a better selfie camera, albeit sacrificing some speed and display quality. The standard Mi 8 is, as you might expect, the best all-rounder, offering the performance, cameras and display of the Mi 8 Pro at a more attractive price, and all you really lose is the in-display fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi’s been teasing the two phones for quite a bit in their social media channels, though both devices are expected to make their global debut in two days’ time. We earlier reported pricing for both devices through a leaked flyer provided to us, but apparently, Xiaomi says the price isn’t final yet and is still subject to change. So there’s still a chance that the price tags for the 4GB/64GB variant (Php 14,990) and 6GB/128GB (Php 17,990 ) variant of the Mi 8 Lite, and the prices for the 8GB/128GB variant (Php 32,990) for the Mi 8 Pro can still change for the better.
