Sony Xperia 10 VIII and VII get Android 17, but miss out on the three most exciting features
The Sony Xperia 1 VIII already received the update to Android 17 in September, and Sony has now begun rolling out the year's biggest operating system update to the Xperia 10 VIII ($639 on Amazon) and the Xperia 10 VII. The Xperia 10 VI will no longer receive the update, contrary to what was originally promised.
However, there is also bad news for users of newer Xperia 10 series models, as the three most exciting new features are reserved for Sony's flagships – the improved desktop mode when an external monitor is connected, the ability to send photos to an iPhone via Apple AirDrop, and the new camera styles are only available to customers who opted for a more expensive model. This makes the update for the Xperia 10 look considerably less substantial than the one for the Xperia 1.
Anyone who installs Android 17 will get at least a few design improvements. Sony is revamping the Quick Settings layout and giving users more options to rearrange the settings, making it easier to access the most frequently used functions. Sony includes new wallpapers and clock designs for the lock screen and allows users to customize the shape and style of app icons on the home screen.
Android 17 also improves screen recording, as users can choose whether to record the entire display or just a single app after the update. It is also possible to record both the sound played by the smartphone and audio through microphones, for example to capture live reactions to videos or games. Further details about the update can be found on Sony's website.
