Sony has pushed the biggest update yet to the WH-1000XM5 following the release of the smaller WF-1000XM5. Rolling out as firmware version 2.0.2, the new update brings several major changes to the WH-1000XM5, including head tracking for a more immersive listening experience.

Sony has released a new update for the WH-1000XM5, arguably the most substantial yet for the high-end headphones. Arriving shortly after the release of the WF-1000XM5, firmware version 2.0.2 for the WH-1000XM5 is only a 5.27 MB download. However, it contains more changes for the headphones than its file size would suggest.

On the one hand, Sony has added the option of using its LDAC Bluetooth codec and Bluetooth Multipoint simultaneously. Previously, it was only possible to choose between its high-fidelity codec or the option or connecting the WH-1000XM5 to two devices simultaneously. For reference, the WF-1000XM4 received this functionality months ago; Sony has not clarified why it took so long for the newer WH-1000XM5 to reach parity in this regard.

On the other hand, firmware version 2.0.2 enables head tracking, a feature that is already available on competing headphones like the AirPods Max. According to Sony's changelog, head tracking is tied to devices running Android 13 or newer and to certain video streaming apps. Still, the new feature should provide an improved soundstage in the cases where it is supported. Please note that Samsung disables head tracking with third-party audio products. You can download firmware version 2.0.2 through the Sony Headphones Connect app.
