The all-new Sony VAIO Fit 14 delivers a lot of bang—namely a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a high-definition touch screen—for a reasonable number of bucks. It's a solid, though not standout, thin-and-light entry for those who want portability with a splash of multimedia prowess.

The Sony VAIO Fit 14 (SVF14A15CXB) ($849 list) is an almost-ultrabook. The Sony VAIO Fit 14 is a mainstream laptop that comes as close as you can without being an official ultrabook, but it went over specification. It's nice to look at and somewhat powerful, but a couple of issues keeping it from scoring higher.

The $849 Sony VAIO Fit 14 is an attractive notebook that delivers power and a compelling suite of apps to leverage its third-generation Core i5 processor. Unfortunately, below-average battery life and a shallow keyboard keep this notebook from earning a higher score. Overall, the Fit 14 is a pretty good premium 14-inch notebook that delivers solid performance and looks good doing it, but it's not a good fit if you need long endurance.

The Sony VAIO Fit 14 is a mainstream laptop that's almost an ultrabook with a few glaring drawbacks that keep it in the middle of the pack. If you're interested in the system and its higher resolution screen, give the system a tryout in your local big box store. If you can tolerate the keyboard and if you won't mind carrying the AC adapter with you, the system is a good find. However, for most users, systems like our Editors' Choice for entry-level touch ultrabooks Acer Aspire M5-481PT-6644 are a better choice overall.

The Sony Vaio Fit 14 is proof that a budget-friendly laptop need not look like one, nor sacrifice performance to get a better-looking design. The Sony Vaio Fit 14 is a pretty excellent laptop for the money. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone looking for a general-purpose system that can handle day-to-day tasks. The fact that it looks and feels nice is a bonus, too.

Sony's Windows 8 software preload emphasizes creativity, with the video- and music-managing bundle the company calls Sony Imagination Studio—Movie Studio Platinum, DVD Architect Studio, Acid Music Studio, and SoundForge Audio Studio. Should you buy the VAIO Fit 15? It's tough to say conclusively, since we still don't know what other companies like HP and Toshiba are going to sell this summer. We do know this: the Fit 15 kicks off back-to-school season on a strong note. We applaud Sony for standardizing on certain specs, like backlit keyboards and higher-res screens.

The Sony Vaio Fit E is a solid all-purpose mainstream laptop that’s attractive and not too heavy with a good keyboard and plenty of ports. However, at the $899 asking price for this configuration, we’d like to see better performance. The elements that raised the price of our review unit – full HD, touchscreen, max RAM – aren’t necessary, and it’s worth leaving them off the table to balance price and value.

The VAIO Fit 15 Touch provided decent, but not outstanding performance, achieving a Notebook Worldbench 8.1 score of 158. (We use an Asus VivoBook S550CA, powered by an Intel Core i5-3317u, as our 100-point baseline.) The Core i7-3537U-powered Toshiba Kirabook has produced the highest Notebook Worldbench 8.1 score to date: 284. But the KiraBook has a 256GB SSD and costs more than twice as much as the Fit 15, so that’s no big surprise.

Slim all-rounder. Sony's latest coup follows current laptop trends in the way of a slim casing and Full HD touchscreen. That is accompanied by a gaming-suitable graphics core and a hard drive with a high memory capacity. Seen as a whole, Sony should have a good all-round laptop in its range. Our test report clarifies whether this is true.

It’s nice to see Sony making a real effort to produce a decent budget laptop, and the attractive display and speakers on the Sony Vaio Fit 15E make it a good choice for entertainment and web browsing. However, it is fairly heavy and battery life is relatively modest too, which means that the Fit 15E is probably more suited to life at home than in a backpack.

The Sony Vaio Fit SVF15212SN is priced at an MRP of Rs 34,990, which we feel is a bit expensive because it comes with only 2GB of RAM. The price of a 2GB module is roughly around Rs 1,400, and pushes the total to a little more than Rs 36,000. For that price you can buy a laptop with discrete graphics and 4GB of RAM or a more powerful configuration with Intel Core i5 processor. The only forte of this laptop is the brilliant sound quality, but that alone doesn’t justify the premium.

Without doubt, the Sony VAIO Fit machines are very impressive. Particularly the one that we have tested here, the Sony VAIO Fit 15E (SVF15212SNB), with an MRP of Rs. 34,990. What you get are fairly standard specs for this price bracket, but the build quality is extremely impressive and the well sculpted looks give it a much more expensive feel. The tested battery life figures point to excellent real world performance. Its only real rival is the HP Sleekbook 15, and the final choice will ideally rest on which one you prefer more. Between the two, the VAIO wins in terms of design and audio performance. The HP Sleekbook is still ahead in terms of how comfortable the keyboard is.

Even with an adequate processor and lots of connectivity, the Sony Vaio Fit 15E just adds fail on top of fail—starting with the screen, which has low brightness, low contrast and unfaithful colours. The VAIO Fit 15E represents good value for money if you're after a 15in laptop that's attractive and reasonably comfortable to use. The Vaio Fit 15 is a powerful and versatile 15-inch laptop, but small details such as the limited battery life and viewing angles on the screen mean that it doesn't quite reach the standard you'd expect for a laptop in this price range. The Sony VAIO Flip 15 ($1,199 as tested) raises two questions: How much extra would you pay to shift from a touch-screen laptop to a laptop/tablet convertible, and why would you want a relatively big and heavy 15.5-inch tablet?Sony outdoes its own Duo slider with perhaps the best laptop/tablet hybrid design we've seen, but the smaller and lighter Flip 13 and 14 are probably better examples than this 15.5-inch, 5.1-pound configuration.

On the whole, we are bullish on the way Sony handles the convertible laptop conundrum with the Sony VAIO Flip 15. The mid-lid hinge solves a lot of the problems that the Yoga-style flip introduces, and is much more modern than the old swing and pivot hinge on older convertible tablet/laptops. The overall weight and bulkiness of the unit needs to improve if this method is to become the form factor that users accept.

There are few bigger-screen hybrids right now, likely because the mechanics of flipping or folding a 15-inch or larger screen is complicated compared with a smaller 11-inch or 13-inch one. Sony does an excellent job of making its fold-over Flip 15 screen mechanism feel smooth and secure, but the odd decision to not have the tablet mode lie completely flat makes the system's tablet mode awkward to hold or carry.

The Flip series has an innovative design that does indeed improve on some of its competitors' shortcomings. We're just not sure it makes sense for a 15-inch notebook. While the smaller Flip 13 and Flip 14 look promising, the 15 is bulky for a convertible, and is awkward to use in tablet mode, even when it's resting in your lap.

Sony Vaio Flip 14 SV-F14N13CXB
The Sony Vaio Flip 14 SV-F14N13CXB definitely stands out because of its sleek and unique exterior. The laptop has sharp edges, flat faces and a reflective aluminum lid. Sony has always produced stylish laptops and the Sony Vaio Flip 14 SV-F14N13CXB is no exception.
This ultrabook only provides the minimum connections due to its thin size. The Flip 14 has two USB ports, an HDMI port, audio jack, SD card reader and an Ethernet port which allows wired connections to the Internet. Aside from wired internet, the Flip 14 also has the standard WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless connectivity.
The Sony Vaio Flip 14 SV-F14N13CXB houses a 14 inch full HD IPS screen that gives better clarity as well as bright and vivid colors, which is a common thing for IPS screens. Under the hood, the Flip 14 is powered by an Intel Core i5-4200U processor, an average processor for this price range. It doesn't come with an SSD but features a 500 GB HDD.
In a nutshell, the Sony Vaio Flip 14 SV-F14N13CXB is an ultrabook that looks and feels great. However, while it excels in its exterior, the performance of this laptop is not up to par, at least when compared to its competitors with the same price range.

The Multi Flip is one of the more interesting devices Sony has released, but the the Japanese firm about to sell its PC division it'll need to be a spectacular product to get a recommendation. With Sony set to flog its PC business, it's almost impossible to recommend buying a Vaio branded device at this time. The average performance and poor battery life mean the Multi Flip is easily better by rival machines too.

Like the Sony Tap 11, the Vaio Multi-flip 14A is an interesting experiment in hybrid design, but ultimately it has too many flaws to justify its price. If you want a screen that can rotate to create a Windows 8 tablet, you should pay more for the superior Dell XPS 12. If £860 is your budget’s upper bound it’d be worth paying less for the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 15, which we think is a better buy

The Flip 13 is a tri-mode ultrabook that can be used as a traditional laptop, a tablet, or a freestanding touch-screen PC. The Sony VAIO Flip 13 is arguably the most cleverly designed of a clever lot of convertible laptops. Sony seems to have taken the idea of a Windows convertible to heart. The latest from them is the VAIO Flip 13, following on from the VAIO Duo. But, things aren't what they seem. In the traditional laptop mode, this is pretty much the ultrabook you would have wanted. But, the twisty and bendy bits aren't that impressive, and the "slide this out" and "twist this here" process is something that you will have to remember - it doesn't come naturally. Unless you want an ultrabook that can do all the Matrix style show off, you would be better off spending this much money on a more conventional laptop or ultrabook.

The Vaio Fit 13A Multi-Flip is a beautiful device with quality finish and materials and an original, practical mechanism for switching between laptop and tablet modes. But then you turn it on, and the fan starts to kick in like an engine and it only lasts a few hours of use. It had plenty of promise, but Sony ultimately failed to win us over.

The Sony VAIO Fit 13A is priced at a steep Rs 99,990, which is a lot of money given the configuration. Hybrids have always commanded a premium over Ultrabooks, simply due to the fact that they can transform into a tablet. While the Fit 13A works very well as notebook and can also pull of some tablet duty, it’s definitely no tablet replacement. However, the really steep price for one novelty feature stops us from recommending it.

Sony has managed to design a refined hybrid Ultrabook; perhaps one of the best designs we've seen. Dell's XPS 12 has a similar design in which the screen flips within an external frame, but it isn't quite as stylish. Acer has also tried a double hinge with the Aspire R7, but its design necessitated moving the trackpad to behind the keyboard. Sony's implementation is simple, makes total sense, and just works. In addition to all its other attributes, Sony is offering a number of perks to early buyers: there's a free pair of headphones worth Rs. 12,990; the aforementioned unlimited music download offer; one year's accidental damage cover; and a discounted two year warranty extension. There's also a six-month EMI scheme on some banks' credit cards. All these things have to be taken into account when evaluating the device's value proposition.

Sony's hybrid style is in full effect on the VAIO Fit Multi-flip, which is a 13in notebook that can easily be turned into a tablet. We like it a lot due to the design and the included ports and specs, but we think the build could stand to be a little sturdier and the screen less reflective.

The VAIO Fit 13A multi-flip is attractive, both visually and physically, but it puts in an inconsistent showing. The elegant hinge design and glorious display are soured by negatives such as the noisy cooling fans and patchy build quality. There's promise here, but if you're in the market for a hybrid device, the Dell XPS 12 is a far better buy.

At 1.3KG this convertible offers a lot for the weight. The tablet mode, especially, is great with the digitizer pen. Battery capacity could be better and the keyboard isn’t top of the class but there’s nothing ‘bad’ here. All the ports that a consumer would need are available (no DisplayPort though) and the overall style of the Flip is great. The screen looks like a gem too.

Sony Vaio Fit multi-flip SV-F13N1L2E/S
Convertibles are a growing trend. Manufacturers offer more and more models and Sony added their latest attempt, the Sony Vaio Fit multi-flip SV-F13N1L2E/S. The stylish white case is made from a combination of plastics and aluminum. A size of 20 mm x 377 mm x 254 mm reads like a sleek and slim device, and the 1.3 kg weight should pose no obstacles to portability. Ports are somewhat limited compared to similar devices, with just two USB 3.0 ports and one HDMI port. An optional dongle for HDMI to VGA is available for a surcharge.
One potentially attractive feature is the included digitizer pen. A 36 Wh Lithium-Ion battery is integrated and careful use should get the user one workday of use. The keyboard is backlit with shallow Chiclet style keys and a touchpad. The 13.3 inch IPS screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, which should provide a great viewing experience. This device is powered by the Haswell Intel Core i5-4200U that clocks in at 1.6 GHz and runs Windows 8. Decent performance should be possible and the Intel HD Graphics 4400 should handle most everyday tasks with ease, but demanding programs and games will not find a happy home on this machine. Overall, this machine might be beat by quite a few others for a similar price.

A chameleon. The multi-flip presents itself as a transformation artist. At one moment, it sports a clamshell look; in the next, it is suddenly a tablet PC. What does Sony do better or worse than the numerous convertibles on the market?

There's certainly nothing like the Sony Vaio Flip 15, it's a full size yet slim and light 15" laptop with a convertible design and a digital pen in a premium case with dedicated graphics. You might think of it as the upscale alternative to the second generation Acer Aspire R7, which also has an N-Trig digitizer and a 15" full HD display.

Quick convertible. Sony has come up with an innovative construction that allows converting a laptop into a tablet quickly. Besides the review sample's unusually high resolution of 2880x1620 pixels, particularly its size of 15.5 inches stands out, as that is actually incompatible with its use as a portable tablet.

The nice price and screen work in the Sony VAIO Flip 11's favor. Unfortunately, some design issues, sluggish performance, low battery life, and VAIO's reduced presence in the U.S. all keep the system in the middle of the pack. If you need a less expensive price tag, better multimedia performance, longer battery life, and a full-size keyboard, then stick to systems like the Lenovo IdeaPad U430 Touch, our Editors' Choice for ultrabooks. If the tablet form factor appeals to you, seek out the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga or our Editors' Choice for Windows slate tablets, the Microsoft Surface Pro 2, both of which are much better performers all around (though pricier)..

The HP EliteBook Revolve 810 G2 is a portable powerhouse that mixes excellent battery life with impressive performance. I found that it worked better as a laptop or presentation system than a tablet or fold-flat system; in addition, at more than a half-pound overweight, it's tedious to hold as a tablet. And even the entry-level models are surprisingly expensive compared to the competition. Frankly, I was wowed by the Dell XPS 11's ultra-high-resolution screen, its sleek profile and low weight. Easily the best of the bunch at being a tablet, the XPS 11's soft skin is inviting to the touch. Finally, despite having the most complicated hinge design of the three convertibles, the Sony Vaio Fit 11A | Flip PC offered the least number of movement configurations of the three laptops. As a tablet, I found it awkward to hold vertically, while as a laptop, the screen wobbled noticeably and the volume control is hidden behind the display. The Flip does, however, have a nice 5-degree tilt when it's set up on a desk as a tablet.

As we worked on this review in early February 2014, the news broke that Sony is selling its PC business to a new company established by private equity firm Japan Industrial Partners. The smallest and lowest-priced of Sony's four Flip PC convertibles is a surprisingly capable as well as versatile laptop/tablet that looks more expensive than $799.

Last hurrah. Sony launches a convertible dubbed Vaio Fit 11A multi-flip on the market. It provides innumerable configurations for home use, and is likely one of the last devices that the manufacturer brings to the international market. Will Sony leave with a blast?
Sony Vaio Flip 15 SV-F15N1L2ES
The Sony Vaio Flips are Sony’s answer to flexible laptops. The Sony Vaio Flip 15 SV-F15N1L2ES is the bigger model of the series. Though bigger in size, the Flip 15 offers the same flexibility as the rest. The body and lid is made from aluminum making it look very sleek and solid, so users won't feel afraid of flipping the screen.
The 15 inch display is certainly big enough for most users, offering much screen space for comfortable reading and for watching movies. The 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution offers FullHD graphics and has wide viewing angles. However, the audio is a little soft for a device of its size. The Sony Vaio Flip 15 SV-F15N1L2ES is powered by an Intel Core i5 4200U; a pretty good processor on its own. Of course it isn't some top class processor, however, it is more than enough for casual to moderate uses. It doesn't come with a secondary graphics card aside from the Intel Graphics 4400 unfortunately.
All in all, the Sony Vaio Flip 15 SV-F15N1L2ES is a pretty decent laptop, which looks good both inside and outside. However, its size does not really make it as easy to carry around as the others in its series. It could qualify as a reasonably priced desktop replacement, too.

It wasn’t the best note to depart on, but Sony’s VAIO Fit 15A was one of the more interesting hybrid tablet laptops to come by the GadgetGuy reviews desk. It’s a shame Sony didn’t spend more time refining this concept, because like some of the other hybrid ideas we’ve seen, there’s certainly some promise here, though it would have been nice to see it matched with a better keyboard, stronger battery life, and a little more performance. We’re not sure the $1500 price is warranted for this machine, but you find it for much less and can’t decide on what you need, the VAIO Fit 15A is an interesting middle ground.

More Flop than Flip. Sony's unique take on the convertible concept has produced a very nice-looking series of Flip notebooks to compete in the notebook-tablet hybrid space. The Flip 14 is eye candy for sure, but there is more than meets the eye.. and it's not all pretty.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor graphics card in the high end Ivy Bridge models. Offers a different clock speed in the different CPU models (ULV to desktop quad core) and therefore a different performance.
Intel HD Graphics 4400:
ULV integrated GPU (GT2) with 20 EUs found on certain Haswell CPU models.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M: Mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GT 700M series. Based on the Kepler architecture (GK208) and manufactured by TSMC in a 28nm process.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M: Mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GT 700M series. Based on the Kepler architecture and manufactured by TSMC in a 28nm process.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel HD Graphics 2000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The 2000 is the slower, internally GT1 called, version with 6 Execution Units (EUs).
Intel HD Graphics (Bay Trail):
Integrated GPU for tablet and notebook Bay Trail SoCs. Based on the Ivy Bridge GPU with four Execution Units and support for DirectX 11.
Intel HD Graphics (Ivy Bridge): In the mobile Ivy Bridge Celeron and Pentium CPUs integrated processor graphics card. The HD Graphics is the slower, GT1 called, part with less execution units (EUs) and only one texture sampler - compared to the GT2 HD Graphics 4000.

Intel Core i5:
3337U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 1.8 - 2.7 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1100 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
4200U:
Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 2.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3537U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 2.0 - 3.1 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1200 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
4500U:
Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.8 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.0 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual-channel DDR3 memory controller.
Intel Core i3:
3227U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 1.9 GHz (no Turbo Boost) and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1100 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
3217U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.8 GHz (no Turbo Boost) and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.
4005U: Haswell-based ULV dual-core processor clocked at 1.7 GHz without Turbo Boost support. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4400 and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

13.00:
There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.196 kg:
2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
72.68%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
