Founded in 2002, Sonos had over 1,700 employees in 2024. Sadly, the last few years were riddled with various problems caused by the global economic slowdown, as well as various software and product support-related controversies. Now, the company is splitting the Product organization into groups that will handle hardware, software, design, quality, and operations. Unfortunately, this move also involves eliminating some jobs.
According to a public letter by the interim CEO Thomas Conrad, "about 200 positions" will cease to exist and those affected will receive a severance package based on the period spent with Sonos. Additionally, their RSUs will continue to vest through the February 15 vest date, and those on the quarterly bonus plan will receive a Q1 bonus, if attained. The US employees who will lose their jobs will continue to receive health care coverage through the severance period.
As revealed in the letter mentioned above, Sonos is currently aiming to improve project prioritization. Thomas Conrad believes that the company's recent under-commitment to too many projects necessitates a fix. In the meantime, those interested in Sonos products can hit Amazon and grab the Era 100 Alexa-enabled smart speaker for $199 instead of $249 thanks to the limited-time deal that involves a 20% discount. This speaker is available in black or white, and both color choices are discounted for now.
