New Meta layoffs affect several departments, including those in charge of WhatsApp and Instagram
Although Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram (alongside its sibling Threads) remain popular, Meta continues laying off people. This ordeal started in 2022, when no less than 11,000 people lost their jobs. Back then, the reason was a far lower than expected growth coming out of the pandemic period. Labeled as a "year of efficiency" by Mark Zuckerberg, 2023 ended with another 10,000 job cuts. This week, insiders familiar with the matter revealed that Meta is kicking out more people, although the number is small (but undisclosed yet).
Yesterday, Meta's spokesman Dave Arnold talked to The Verge. He revealed that "Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy." He also added that, apart from job cuts, this new round of changes also includes relocating some teams and changing the roles of certain employees.
While Arnold did not point out any specific departments, the insiders mentioned earlier said that WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs are all being targeted. One of those who shared the news on their social media is Jane Manchun Wong, who joined the Threads team last year and previously had become popular for reporting on unannounced features coming to apps.
Despite being published in June 2022, which means it doesn't cover the period in which all job cuts mentioned earlier took place, Mark Zuckerberg's biography, by Daniel Ichbiah, might be an interesting read for many of those interested in him and Meta. This 300-page book is only available in Kindle format for $6.
