Some of HP's best 14-inch EliteBook laptops this year are also some of the most confusing to name

HP offers not one or two, but at least three (EliteBook X G1i 14, EliteBook Ultra G1i 14, and EliteBook X G1a 14) high-end 14-inch EliteBook laptops with very similar visual designs and names between them. Their specifications are otherwise quite different to target separate market segments.

HP laptop names can be quite confusing to follow and the latest 14-inch EliteBook models are no exception. The EliteBook X G1i 14, EliteBook Ultra G1i 14, and EliteBook X G1a 14 are three distinct systems with otherwise similar design philosophies to the point where they can be visually difficult to tell apart. This page breaks down some of those differences to make shopping a little easier for anyone in the market for a particular model.

EliteBook X G1i 14

The Intel-based EliteBook X G1i 14 is slightly thicker and larger than the EliteBook Ultra G1i 14 but it offers additional ports alongside AMD variants (named EliteBook X G1a 14). It's notable for offering only 60 Hz or 120 Hz IPS display options and no OLED to extend battery life - our tests show over 18 hours of actual web browsing to be longer-lasting than any of the three EliteBook models. Lunar Lake comes standard with optional vPro.

EliteBook Ultra G1i 14

The EliteBook Ultra G1i 14 comes with the same Intel Lunar Lake CPU options as the EliteBook X G1i 14 but with 1800p OLED as standard to distinguish it from the rest of the pack. It's the thinnest option of the bunch and can be thought of as the "superior" version of the EliteBook X G1i 14 due to its thinner build and higher quality display. Nonetheless, it ships with a slightly smaller battery pack (64 Wh vs. 68 Wh) and battery life is shorter by several hours as well.

EliteBook X G1a 14

This model is the thickest and heaviest of the three as it ships with the Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 375 which is one of AMD's fastest mobile Zen 5 processors. Consequently, it targets power users and editors looking for more oomf than the much slower Lunar Lake options mentioned above.

We recommend checking out our individual reviews on the EliteBook X G1i 14, EliteBook Ultra G1i 14, and EliteBook X G1a 14 to learn more about the models and their differences. It's worth noting that Qualcomm and convertible versions also exist called the EliteBook Ultra G1q 14 and EliteBook X Flip G1i, respectively, which expand the 14-inch HP lineup to even more confusing heights.
