Early 3DMark and Cinebench R23 results tip AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D to match non-X3D chips outside of gaming

Early leaked benchmarks of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D reveal that the new 3D V-Cache Zen 5 CPU is significantly faster than its predecessor in gaming tasks. Despite this, the 9950X3D still manages to keep up with the regular Ryzen 9 9950X in non-gaming workloads — an area where X3D CPUs previously fell flat.

The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D is slated to launch on March 12, with reviews allegedly embargoed until March 11. Despite the launch being more than two weeks in the future, a supposed set of benchmarks, seemingly published early accidentally, puts up some pretty impressive productivity performance from the Ryzen 9 9950X3D.

According to the benchmarks published by PCBuild on Facebook (post now deleted), reveal that the performance leaks we reported on earlier this week aren't far off the mark. The Bulgarian system integrator and hardware retailer apparently put the Ryzen 9 9950X3D through both Cinebench R23 and PCMark Time Spy, with the average score coming out ahead of the Ryzen 9 7950X3D in both counts, even if the gaming win is less than significant.

Comparing the images of the benchmark results to our in-house testing and benchmark database shows the 9950X3D beating the 7950X3D by nearly 17% in Cinebench multicore. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 9 9950X (curr. $559.75 on Amazon) is closer, only falling behind by around 3.7% in Cinebench R23. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D and vanilla 9950X are closer in the CB R23 single-core tests, with only 72 points, or 3.5% separating the 3D V-Cache CPU from its slower counterpart. Again, the 9950X3D pulls ahead of the 7950X3D significantly, with a lead of around 11%.

Gaming benchmarks appears to tell a different story, though.

Benchmark AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D AMD Ryzen 9 9950X AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
Cinebench R23 multi 42,423 40,924 36,291
Cinebench R23 single 2,279 2,202 2,053
3DMark Time Spy CPU 17,324 16,112 17,206

Compared to the same average results from our testing, the 3DMark Time Spy CPU scores, the previous-generation Ryzen 9 7950X3D actually pulls ahead of the Zen 5 9950X3D in one of the leaked benchmarks, posting a 3.7% lead over the newer CPU. The other Time Spy image in the leak, though, shows a maximum CPU score of 17,234 points, which again puts the Ryzen 9 9950X3D ahead of the 7950X3D by 118 points — an almost immeasurably difference, to be clear.

These are also just two benchmark results, so they don't paint a complete picture of the gaming performance, which can vary greatly from game to game, but it should provide an indication of what to expect when the Ryzen 9 9950X3D launches in March. It also indicates that the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D (curr. $740 on Amazon) will likely continue to be a strong contender in the realm of gaming, even after AMD's changes to the 3D V-Cache amount and packaging
