Two years after Nvidia kicked off the RTX 40 series in October 2022, the company is reportedly drawing the curtain on the RTX 4070 and above by shortly ceasing new supply of the GPUs. According to rumors circulating on Chinese Board Channels, the China-exclusive RTX 4090D has already been discontinued while the inventory of the RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super won't survive November.

Reports of Nvidia cutting the supply of high-end RTX 40 GPUs by as much as 50% first circulated in August. Back then, we postulated that this possible supply cut could’ve been initiated to prepare the market for the RTX 50 “Blackwell” launch.

More news regarding the discontinuation of several RTX 40 models has now surfaced on Chinese Board Channels. The latest report alleges that Nvidia is culling the production of RTX 4070 and up in the coming months with existing inventory expected to dry up before the new RTX 50 GPUs land on the scene.

RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Super

Chinese Board Channels claim that there won’t be much supply of the RTX 4070 and the RTX 4070 Super in Q4'24. The fresh supply of new RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Super models will reportedly keep arriving till December. Following this, the RXT 4070/Super stock of AIBs is expected to dry up around January, while store shelves will empty a bit later.

In other words, the remaining two months of 2024 are expected to see little supply of the RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Super with the inventories set to diminish further in the months after.

RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super

Like the RTX 4070/Super, the RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super are also on their way out. Information circulating on Board Channels alleges that the existing inventory of the GPUs will run dry in November. So, buyers could find it next-to-impossible to buy an RTX 4070 Ti Super or an RTX 4080 Super (Available on Amazon) in December.

Additionally, the rumors claim that, since the RTX 5080 is expected to drop sometime in January, there will be no new 80-class GeForce GPU to buy for over a month. This situation is particularly tricky since chances are high that the RTX 5080 will be more expensive than the RTX 4080.

RTX 4090 discontinuation and RTX 5090

According to Chinese Board Channels, AIBs have no new RTX 4090D, the China-specific version of the RTX 4090, cards to sell. This could mean that Nvidia has stopped producing new RTX 4090 GPUs and the company’s focus is now on the RTX 5090 which is expected to land in January with a substantial price increase in tow.

The RTX 4090 supply cut also seems to have hit the US, as there is not a single RTX 4090 card under $2,000 on Amazon and Newegg, at the time of writing. For instance, the MSI Gaming Trio RTX 4090, which was retailing for $1,930 in September, is now going for $2,130 on Amazon.

Long story short, if you were waiting for holiday discounts on upper-midrange and high-end RTX 40 GPUs, now is the time to start looking, as you may not get an opportunity to buy a new RTX 40 card at MSRP in a month.
