After months of investigating, Samsung has finally revealed what caused the Galaxy Ring to swell and clamp on to a user’s finger. While detail was limited, the company has reassured users that there is no wider battery concern with the smart ring.

Samsung has been investigating the swollen Galaxy Ring incident that sent a user to the hospital after getting stuck on their finger. Over three months later, the company has shared a statement identifying the cause of the bulging in the ring, but without going into a lot of detail. It did, however, clear the smart ring of any design or safety concerns.

For those unaware, Daniel from Zone of Tech shared an incident on X involving their Galaxy Ring, in September last year. From the photos, it could be seen that the Galaxy Ring was swollen on the inside, clamping down hard on Daniel’s finger. Being unable to take the ring of, Daniel had to go to the hospital and get it removed, causing him to miss his flight. Following the incident, Samsung compensated Daniel for the hotel and paid for his flight, as well as took the ring for investigation.

Now, over three months later, the company has shared a statement with Daniel claiming that the swelling in the Galaxy Ring was caused by a “crack in the internal moulding” and that there is no wider safety risk pertaining to the Galaxy Ring’s battery. Following is the complete statement from the company.

Customer safety is our highest priority. Samsung has been in regular contact with Daniel whilst we conducted our investigation. Following an examination by Samsung and then a further analysis by an independent external agency, it was confirmed that the swelling in Daniel’s Galaxy Ring was caused by a crack in the internal moulding and that there was no wider product battery safety risk. The Galaxy Ring has been designed for everyday wear, with durability at the core. Customer care guides for all our devices can be found at: samsung.com/uk/support

As per the statement, Samsung and a third-party independent agency reached the same conclusion after the investigation. However, neither Samsung, nor the agency, shared the reason for the crack itself.

Daniel had noticed battery life issues prior to the incident and so did a few other users with their Galaxy Rings. When brought to Samsung’s attention, it responded by stating that those who are facing battery issues should reach out and will be addressed individually.
