Reviews for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip
With the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung is launching its second foldable smartphone, which features a folding concept similar to that of the Razr. The price is also similarly high, but the Samsung mobile phone promises a stronger configuration based on its data sheet. In this review you'll find out if the Galaxy Z Flip also convinces in everyday life or if it's just an expensive fashion gag.

Smartphones have already become an integral part of our lives. It has further proven to be an essential communication tool, especially for the current situation. From online classrooms to entertainment, smartphones are becoming an all-in-one package. That said, what if you want something more? For example, what if you want the best tech specs available or the coolest features? I'm sure everyone would love that, but all phones look similar these days. For the past decade, more smartphone brands have emerged, and they tend to just copy each other. Nothing wrong with that, but none of these phones looks as stylish as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. With such a unique design, Samsung is paving the way for the future of new smartphone designs. In fact, you could say that this is the most stylish phone Samsung has ever done.

While more and more mid-range phones are picking up high-end tier features from flagships, perhaps Samsung foresaw this and decided something new, something unthinkable - releasing the first foldable smartphone back in 2019. While it wasn't perfect at first, the company set the path to making foldable phones more mainstream. Samsung Malaysia is currently one of few brands that have viable foldable devices available in Malaysia. A flagship is often something very much desired by smartphone enthusiasts because it offers the best features. Back then, the Galaxy Z Fold2 and Galaxy Z Flip were something special but for a high price. But in case you missed it, both of these foldable phones prices have dropped permanently and now consumers can enjoy the one-of-a-kind experience foldable smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip was a great foldable for its time. Even if the clamshell-style form factor isn't quite as useful as something like the Galaxy Z Fold series, the quality of the hinge and display outweigh the negatives. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G with its faster processor is a much better buy, and the Galaxy S21 series is a much safer bet for those who don't crave foldable tech.

The Galaxy Z Flip was the best foldable phone, at least until the Galaxy Z Fold 2 came along. As clever as the design of the Flip is, at a still-high $1,380, it’s hard to recommend this phone over more traditional flagships like the iPhone 11 Pro and Galaxy S20 Plus.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the flip-phone-style foldable smartphone with a 6.7-inch display that collapses in half. Its novelty will turn heads, but so will its extraordinarily high price. It now comes in 4G LTE or 5G, each with durable thin glass that makes it feel more durable than the Moto Razr foldable.

If you’d told me last year that by the Summer of 2020 the new Motorola Razr would be all but gone from the public consciousness, while its Samsung lookalike would be winning hearts and minds … well I’d have said “that’s about as likely as Microsoft trying to buy TikTok.” But the Razr’s early quality control issues and Verizon exclusivity conspired to compound a competitive edge that Samsung already enjoyed: by most metrics that matter, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is just the better phone – and over the past few months I’ve seen more and more of my early-adopter friends snap it up.

Coming to a conclusion about this phone is hard. Last year’s flexible offerings – whether from Huawei, Royole or Samsung – were most definitely early engineering prototypes. And the Samsung offering should never have been released, outside of a few thousand “work in progress” loan units to whet the appetites of influencers. They should not have been put on sale to the general public.

If you aim to make a decisive fashion statement while seeking one of the most compact phones that money can buy, the Galaxy Z Flip is your best bet with its ultra-compact clamshell design that unfurls into a massive 6.7-inch phone with respectable hardware and cameras. It’s not cheap but if you aim to have something that turns heads every time you brandish it, this is it.

While the Z Flip is a massive improvement on the Galaxy Fold, there are still some oddities that users will have to become accustomed to. The fragility of the handset is always top of mind and at times it can be unnerving to consider the screen breaking or something getting through the hinge's protections. While it is a decent smartphone we feel that it is best suited for early adopters and even then we'd urge you to wait for the next iteration of the Z Flip.

So, I tried both. Compared them in a video, and quickly realized Z Flip was the better foldable, but then using it for months has made me ask a more important question: Is a clamshell a better phone, just like in the old days? I mean they're cool, and they do turn some heads, but does the clamshell solve a problem, or is it a very pricey and fragile solution in search for one? Heck after the frenzy of stress testing videos, most of the people I talk to just want to know if it survives real world use, and that is this series' specialty. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and this is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip After The Buzz.

The Galaxy Z Flip is the best folding phone so far, but it still isn’t for everyone. It’s a regular phone size when unfolded and a little coaster of a thing when closed. The specs are high-end but not the best available, and it’s undoubtedly fragile. But if it appeals and you can afford it, there’s a lot of fun to be had with its completely new form factor, top performance and solid battery life.

While the Flip doesn’t pack the utility of a phone that turns into a tablet, like the Galaxy Fold, when it comes to wow-factor, the Z Flip still has it in spades. Is it worth the hefty asking price? Definitely not if you want maximum bang for buck; but if you can afford it and crave a compact clamshell that unfurls into a full-screen smartphone, it’s the only phone worth considering right now.

When I first started using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, I wasn’t expecting much, especially given its 3,300 mAh battery capacity. After a while, I found myself enjoying it a lot more than I expected. You get solid performance, good battery life for the capacity, a vibrant foldable display, great camera, and that clamshell-like feel without sacrificing the Android experience.

The short answer is not quite yet. The phone is good, really good. But I just have too many niggly concerns about the durability of the device. Overall image quality from the Z Flip’s front camera is quite a ways off the performance of other recent flagships we’ve tested. Although indoor and outdoor exposure, dynamic range, and color are more than reasonable, they’re not excellent. Add to that limited range of focus and low texture, mediocre bokeh shots, as well as generally poor low-light results, and selfies from the Z Flip won’t blow your socks off. With its folding screen the main selling point, you may be prepared to sacrifice a bit of camera quality for its convenience and portability, but there are better performers for serious selfie shooters in this price range.

But unlike the Galaxy Fold, which worked but offered the choice of pointlessly small phone screen or needlessly large phone screen, the Z Flip demonstrates how a folding phone could add value by augmenting the regular phone experience. Assuming the fragility concerns could be well and truly put to bed, I'm excited to see the future of phones that can be folded away but still useful when you don't need the full experience.

Folding devices are coming of age before our eyes and the future looks pretty darn good. At the moment though, folding phones are a yet to be proven technology. As good as they have become in a short space of time, it still feels like first generation technology and as a result, not quite ready for everyday use by “average” users. As I said earlier though I’ve had less than two days with this new foldable. It will be interesting to see if my opinion changes with more use.

While it's a lot 'cheaper' than the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip's retail price of S$1,998 (that's two grand) is still a costly affair, and you would have to observe some handling etiquette to ensure it stays looking as good as you first bought it. Foldable phones are still in their early days, so their long-term reliability is still untested. At this point, after 100 days, my phone has kept up well to-date, and I expect it to continue for some time to come. Despite some of the concerns, if you've always wanted to go retro with clamshell-style phones, be the first mover in embracing cutting-edge technology and look cool while doing so, there's little else to keep you from making the jump - just like I did.

When it comes to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, the star of the show is that folding screen, and your take on the phone’s premium price tag is more about what that feature means to you than anything else. The Flip’s imaging system is far from an afterthought, but it doesn’t really compete with the best available cameras in other phones in its lofty price bracket (including Samsung’s other flagship devices).

Our final verdict should include the value for money comparison, and in that case, Galaxy Z Flip has failed miserably. The phone is good, there’s no doubt, but its price of over $1,300 is a serious downside, primarily because you can find phones with better specs for far less money. With that in mind, Samsung should reconsider performing these expensive experiments in the future and focus more on producing great quality phones as they have done in the past.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is one of the few phones I've been truly excited to review, but after using it for two weeks, I'd say that I'm left with mixed feelings. On one hand, it's super cool holding a piece of the future, and it's refreshing to review a phone so different from anything I've ever tested. On the other, the Galaxy Z Flip is too expensive for a phone with questionable long-term durability and last year's specs.

Sure, the Galaxy Z Flip has its shortcomings, be that in its lack of an IP rating, the camera setup, or the cover display, but what phone doesn’t? The important thing to recognize here is what it represents. It’s flipping the script on what a modern smartphone should be. It shows us that foldable phones aren’t too out there, that they’re more than a proof of concept. What Samsung has achieved with the Galaxy Z Flip is going to shift the entire industry and it leaves us very excited for the future. $1,380 is a lot of money, but if you’re okay with spending it, spend it on the Galaxy Z Flip.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip launched to much fanfare in February 2020. Dubbed as the third "mass-market" foldable smartphone, this folding phone flipped (quite literally) the display into a clamshell design reminiscent of retro flip phones as well as the newly updated Motorola RAZR foldable. Unlike the Moto, however, Samsung packed some seriously good specs into this handset. You get a 1080p equivalent ultra-wide 21.9:9 1080p-equivalent display, a Snapdragon 855+, 8GB, 256GB+ storage, and all a camera assembly similar to that found in the Galaxy S10. Sure, there have been early reports of durability issues from fellow YouTubers like JerryRigEverything, but we believe they're largely blown out of proportion and whilst Samsung should be chastised for misleading advertising, the glass display is *actually* glass and is *actually* really great. The question, however, remains: "Is this phone worth $1,400?" and "Can the Galaxy Z Flip with 2019 specs really hold a candle to Samsung's 2020 flagship Galaxy S20 line?" In a way, yes. In other ways, no. One thing is to be sure: this thing is made of glass, it folds, and it's actually really great.

The Galaxy Z Flip is your best bet at a good foldable experience should you be in the market for one. However, if you’re on the fence about these devices, you’ll be more than fine waiting to see how Samsung improves them. For those who think folding phones are a gimmick, I think you’re mistaken. Take one look at the two newest flagships from the world’s two largest smartphone makers, and you’ll understand the stress that pockets the world over have been under for the past few years. To paraphrase Jimmy McMillan: “phones are too damn big.” A few years back, you still had options if you wanted a powerful smartphone that fit comfortably in your pocket or handbag. Apple’s iPhone SE packed most of the capabilities of a ninth-generation iPhone into a chassis the size of the iPhone 5. And in the Android world, Sony’s aptly named “Compact” line shrunk its flagships down to boxes that could still rest mostly in your palm. But that was 2016 and this is 2020. What are those in search of a small but powerful smartphone to do today? The practical answer – keep waiting until prices come down – is a frustrating one. But for those with money to burn and a thirst for the bleeding edge, the more exciting answer to the compact phone problem … is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. I’ve spent the past six days with Samsung’s newest folding-screen smartphone; join me for the MrMobile Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Review!

If folding phones are ever going to stop being just expensive curiosities, they have to start being normal. I need to be able to just tell you about the screen and performance and camera, not spend the majority of my time explaining why this time maybe — maybe — the screen and hinge won’t explode. They also, obviously, need to start having much more normal prices.

Look, every foldable phone I've seen has a crease. When the light shines directly on it, you see it. When you run your finger down the seam, you feel it. When an exciting thriller or documentary movie plays, or when you're sucked into an engaging article or game, you hardly notice it at all.

This is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Samsung's second bet on a foldable future, and what the company dubs as a new spin into how a smartphone is designed.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip has only been on the market a few days and already there’s a controversy over whether it truly has an ultra thin glass (UTG) display. Samsung has responded to concerns that the first folding phone display in fact wasn’t glass, and various YouTube channels have poked, prodded and even disassembled it. Lisa Gade gives you an explainer on the tech used in Samsung’s second folding phone (likely to also make its way to the Galaxy Fold 2).

The honeymoon phase is interesting regardless of what product you just acquired. Maybe it's that new car smell, or the experience of making your new apartment look just right. With smartphones the experience is usually very similar, unless you wore up at midnight on February 14th and were fast enough to order the new kid in town. This is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Samsung's second bet on a foldable future, and what the company dubs as a new spin into how a smartphone is designed. I know many of you see this and think nostalgia, and remember that cellphone you used in the late 90s or early 2000s. Back then a compact solution that competed with the tanks of the time made sense, but the question is if having a clamshell is actually better in any way than to have a regular smartphone. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and these are my first impressions of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip after 24 hours.

The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is the flip-phone-style foldable smartphone with a 6.7-inch display that collapses in half. Its novelty will turn heads, but so will its price. We're still testing it, but we can already say we like its durable thin glass better than the plastic Galaxy Fold screen, and its overall execution is significantly better than the new Moto Razr.

Samsung has pitched this phone as a folding glass phone that ‘bends the laws of physics’ But… is folding glass actually possible? The only way to find out is with a scratch test. Overall I’m impressed with the Galaxy Z Flip. If they change the name of their screen material to something besides glass I would give it a 10/10 as far as folding phones go. The only physical characteristic this screen material shares with actual glass is the clarity. And I dont think thats fair to consumers. At all.

Starting from 14 February, the Z Flip will be available to buy in either Mirror Purple or Mirror Black from local telcos at S$1,998. It will also be available from the Samsung Online Store. And if you're looking for yet more opinions, my editor has another to share right here:-

The Galaxy Z Flip's flip phone design is a lot more appealing than the book-like approach of the Galaxy Fold. If the cameras work as promised, this could be one appealing foldable device.

Lisa Gade shares her first observations and impressions of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip foldable Android 10 flip phone that turns into a phablet. The phone features a flexible glass OLED 6.7” main display and it’s available in 3 colors plus a designer option. This is a striking looking glass and metal phone that is indeed much more pocketable than big screen phones, and the specs are strong, albeit not as cutting edge as the Samsung Galaxy S20 family models. It has a Snapdragon 855+ CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage, 3 cameras, fingerprint scanner, 3300 mAh battery and bi-directional Qi wireless charging. It’s available on AT&T and Sprint in the US and unlocked for use with any carrier. A final review will follow in 1 week.

Samsung officially revealed the Galaxy Z Flip -- a 6.7-inch phone that, like the Razr, folded in half. But Samsung managed to come up with an "Ultra-Thin Glass" that made its folding screen sturdier than alternatives we've seen.

The Z Flip is intriguing and it's great to see Samsung quickly innovating on the foldable rather than purely sticking with the Fold aesthetic. Unlike the S20 series, the Z Flip isn't fussed on boasting the top-end specs with the main focus here clearly the unique design.

We think the Galaxy Z Flip proves that foldable phones aren't just a fad, or a desperate attempt by companies to come up with something new just for the sake of it. There is some real innovation here, and phones like the Galaxy Z Flip could be just as practical as the phones of today. If this is the future, then sign us up.

Putting aside any market realities or PR decisions, the Galaxy Z Flips is nothing short of captivating, both for its fresh form factor, refined foldable display tech, as well as simply from a design and aesthetic standpoint. As far as actually getting and daily-driving one, though, we expect plenty of uncertainty on users and reviewer's end for the foreseeable future. All we know for sure is that we can't wait to put it through its paces in a full review.

Given what happened with Samsung’s first foldable phone, the company will forgive us for stopping short of declaring it a success until we have one in our hands for more than 15 minutes, but we’re only in February and already we may well have seen 2020’s most interesting smartphone.

The Galaxy Z Flip is by far the best implementation of a foldable phone we’ve seen yet (with the caveat that we still haven’t got our hands on a Surface Neo or Duo), and it seemingly solves many of the problems faced by both its predecessor and the Motorola Razr at a stroke.

It takes a lot to make me forget about a phone that has an insane amount of zoom like the S20 Ultra, but the Galaxy Z Flip has done exactly that. The phone isn’t exactly going to be cheap, but hell, it may just be the device that brings me back into Samsung’s embrace.

The Galaxy Z Flip feels “complete” right out the gate, a feeling that was certainly missing from our initial interaction with the Galaxy Fold. It really doesn’t make you wonder if the device will be able to withstand the rigors of daily use. That’s saying something when the foldable era is just starting out. There’s nothing else on the market that comes close to the Galaxy Z Flip and it might stay this way for quite some time. The Galaxy Z Flip goes on sale in the United States and South Korea day after tomorrow. This is what you get your significant other for Valentine’s Day.

Positive: Impressive design; solid workmanship; high perforance; long battery life; fast fingerprint sensor.

If there is one thing that can be considered the killer feature of the latest of Samsung’s creations, it would be the freestanding screen of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. This new foldable flip phone has all the needed reasons to exist in the market. Well, foldable phones have been circulating on the market with smartphones such as the Motorola Razr, Galaxy Fold and also the Huawei Mate X. This Samsung variant is the newest member to join this limited niche. The killer feature of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip allows its 6.7-inch glass screen to stand upright on its own without any issues. This feature definitely accounts for a remarkable user experience, as it allows the phone to sit open on its own while taking selfies and also during video calls. This freestanding ability, which is called Flex Mode by Samsung, allows for much more convenient video calls, reading articles or even while scrolling when browsing or emailing. This is by far the Z Flip’s most unique, interesting and effective feature, it even allows the users to operate the phone with the hands free. The phone also features the highly advanced Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, which is a favorite among gamers. The Galaxy Z Flip has 256 GB of storage, which improves the phone’s overall performance. Apart from that, the swipe-out screen enables the launching of personal favorite apps and split-screen mode, especially during single-handed usage. Samsung has also included a free plastic case with the purchase of the Galaxy Z Flip, which caters for ease of use for users.
Despite being a way better bet than the Motorola Razr and the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip does carry its own drawbacks that cannot be disregarded. The battery capacity of 3,300 mAh is quite disappointing considering the availability of much bigger and better battery options. Apart from that, the 1.1-inch outer screen is also rather small to operate with. The bendable glass display, on the other hand, is obviously very fragile and increases the vulnerability towards damage from water and dust. Furthermore, fingerprint smudges accumulate very quickly on all the surfaces. The folding also ends up bisecting the screen, making the part that is being viewed relatively small for the user - the viewing section is often less than 4 inches diagonally. This is definitely on the losing site, as it impacts the overall viewing experience. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip might be bringing undeniably unique features to the market, but it is quite expensive for its specifications and obviously out of the reach for most budgets. This is because there are better flagship phones out there with a much more affordable price and way better camera options, longer battery life and water resistance.

It is a small display format for smartphones. You shouldn't be severely defective in vision, and you won't see much detail on the screen and only have a small resolution available. For that, the device should be small and handy, easy to transport.

78.45%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
