A Ukrainian soldier fighting in the trenches has now revealed how their life was saved thanks to their smartphone, seemingly a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, stopping a 7.62 round. The phone is, of course, now ruined but most would consider that a fair trade.

As the war in Ukraine rages on, sympathetic countries from across the globe have sent in military equipment and aid to Ukrainian defenders. Rather than the latest anti-aircraft missile or body armor, however, a Ukrainian soldier looks to have been saved from certain death by the unlikeliest of items: a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

As shared by war correspondent @Osinttechnical on Twitter, a Ukrainian soldier in a trench has revealed how their life was saved by their smartphone. The device, in tandem with a dog tag, looks to have saved the solider from death via bullet, with the round itself going through the phone but not quite hurting the soldier.

While the phone itself is unidentifiable, the case looks incredibly similar to the S-View Flip Cover Case for the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The soldier also appears to indicate that the phone cost the equivalent of almost US$700. That fits in rather nicely with used Galaxy S20 Ultra prices.

It's important to reiterate that the round, apparently a 7.62 caliber, was stopped thanks to both the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the soldier's dog tag. Taking one of those out of the equation may have resulted in a wildly different outcome. Still, it's a win for Samsung, and the phone's owner likely considers the cost of the now-dead device to be money well-spent.
