Rumor: Apple iPad Pro with the brightest LTPO OLED display of all tablets goes into production
Rumors have been circulating for years that Apple will switch from LCDs to OLED displays on the iPad, and the launch is now slowly but surely getting closer. After Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman stated that Apple was planning a big launch event for the successor to the iPad Pro in March 2024, The Elec now reports that LG Display is already starting production of the panel for the 13-inch iPad Pro, while Samsung Display is scheduled to start mass production of the 11-inch panel this week.
Delivery of the new iPad Pro is scheduled to begin in April, matching previous rumors about the announcement in March. In total, Apple is expected to sell around 8 million iPad Pros with OLED displays in 2024. According to display analyst Ross Young, the next-generation iPad Pro's OLED panel will outperform all other OLED tablets on the market in several respects, as it will be the first tablet with an LTPO OLED panel, so that the frame rate can be continuously regulated to reduce power consumption and enable an always-on display under certain circumstances.
Furthermore, the iPad Pro will be the first commercially available product with a 'stacked' OLED panel, i.e. two layers of the self-luminous material are precisely aligned and stacked on top of each other. This theoretically doubles the peak brightness, while achieving a significantly longer service life at the same luminosity, as each pixel only shines half as brightly. Ross Young also claims that, thanks to these panels, the iPad Pro will be the thinnest and lightest OLED tablet to date.
