CIRP, a third-party analytics firm, reports that 17% of iPhone buyers in Q2 2024 were previous Android users. This is the highest second-quarter percentage recorded by the firm in the past five years.

A report from CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) shows that Android had its worst second quarter in the last few years. According to the published report, in Q2 2024, 17% of iPhone buyers previously had an Android phone. This is the highest percentage recorded by the third-party analytics firm in the past five years.

Last year, CIPR reported that only 10% of iPhone buyers previously owned an Android. This was the lowest recorded percentage by the firm in a long time, and the 17% for Q2 2024 is a big jump when compared to it. What's more interesting is that Apple's last phone launch event was in September of last year, and Apple usually announces new smartphones in Q4 of each year.

That means 17% of the previous Android users who switched to iPhone this year weren't pushed by Apple's marketing for a new phone. Instead, it could likely be the other products that the company has launched recently, such as the iPad Pro 2024 and iPad Air 2024 (128 GB WiFi curr. $549 on Amazon).

These hypothetical users may have entered the Apple ecosystem by buying recently launched products and decided to get an iPhone to have a connected experience. Of course, some of the 17% of reported ex-Android iPhone buyers could also not be interested in upgrading their smartphones to the latest Android phones, which has likely made them switch.

Regardless of the reason, such a sudden surge isn't good news for Android. But to see whether this jump becomes an upward trend, we will need to for Q3 and Q4 reports from CIRP.
