Notebookcheck reported on this particular patent from Huawei for a foldable smartphone back in March of last year. Now, after being able to gather up further rumored details of the device, LetsGoDigital has released some striking renders of what the smartphone could look like, and it is definitely not unattractive. The upcoming 5G device, which is expected to be probably announced just before MWC19 Barcelona, is likely to be part of Huawei’s Mate line-up of products.
The renders show the Huawei foldable smartphone with a large display that bends over the full length of the device. It folds into tent mode, can be flattened completely so it looks like a tablet, or it can be folded into a seemingly regular smartphone size with the display showing all the way round, including on the fold. There are no apparent lines or creases, as the fully bendable contraption does not leave an ugly gap. If Huawei produces something this attractive and makes it 5G compatible, then it’s highly possible the company will steal some of the thunder from Samsung’s foldable effort.
No firm name for the foldable smartphone is currently known, although Mate Flex, Mate Fold, Mate Flexi, and Mate F have all been mentioned. There is even speculation that the foldable 5G device could sport a top-end Kirin 980 SoC, just to put the icing on the cake. All this will undoubtedly be reflected in the price, which LetsGoDigital has taken a rough guess at: Somewhere around €1,495 (~US$1,710). It shouldn’t be too long before we find out if the renders match the real-life effort Huawei eventually reveals.
