A leaked image of a promotional banner has confirmed the name of the upcoming foldable 5G smartphone from Huawei: Mate X. The picture doesn’t reveal details about pricing or hardware, but it does show the foldable device in three different forms that give a clear idea of what the Huawei Mate X will look like.

A photo of a promotional banner showing off Huawei’s new foldable 5G smartphone has been leaked online. It’s believed the banner is for the Chinese company’s presence at the upcoming MWC19 event in Barcelona. Some of the text on the banner is obscured by scaffolding, but fortunately it’s easy to see the device’s name: Huawei Mate X.

The Huawei Mate X is a foldable smartphone that already has one major selling point: It has 5G capability. Samsung is believed to be working on a 5G variant of its Galaxy Fold, but it looks like Huawei has beaten the South Korean rival to the punch in this regard.

The Mate X is clearly very different to the Samsung Galaxy Fold. It has one flexible display that folds outwards when the user wants to transform the device from smartphone format to tablet format. Because the Huawei Mate X folds outwards the way it does, there is no crease or hinge disrupting the central part of the display – but it also leaves the foldable 5G smartphone’s screen more prone to damage.
