Rumours about Xiaomi's next flagship smartphone series receiving a new design have been circulating for a while, albeit without any substance. Recently, LetsGoDigital discovered a patent registration made by Xiaomi last year, only published by the Hague International Design System (HIDS), an arm of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO), on October 15. As we discussed, the patent looked like a flagship smartphone and bore a passing resemblance to the Mi 11.
Companies do not always bring patented designs to market, but the timing of its filing and publication implied that something could be afoot. However, a product manager at Redmi, a Xiaomi subsidiary, has nipped that idea in the bud. Writing on Weibo, Wang Teng claimed that the design is 'unbearably ugly' with reference to renders subsequently published by LetsGoDigital and ConceptCreator.
While we doubt that anyone at the company would reveal the Xiaomi 12's design yet, Teng may have kept quiet if the renders were close to the mark. Dismissing the renders completely implies that Xiaomi has something else in the works for the 12 series. Hence, the Xiaomi 12's design continues to remain a mystery.
