The Raspberry Pi 5, by itself, is great for emulating old-school games. However, Jeff Geerling has just shown that when paired with a decent discreet GPU like the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, the SBC can handle modern AAA games in 4K.

Raspberry introduced the Pi 5 with the new Broadcom BCM2712 SoC, a quad-core ARM CPU that's paired with the VideoCore VII GPU. On its own, the SBC is reasonably good for emulating old-school games, but it can't really run modern AAA games with playable FPS.

However, that changes when the Raspberry Pi 5 is paired with a decent discrete GPU, such as the Radeon RX 6700 XT. As Jeff Geerling has just showcased, with such a setup, the SBC can run Doom Eternal, a 2020 AAA title, in 4K. Of course, the FPS was all over the place, but when dialed down to the 1080p resolution, the setup can offer over 30 FPS.

Jeff Geerling notes that the GPU wasn't even being stressed out at the 4K resolution, but the CPU was pushed to its limits. This means that the CPU was the bottleneck, and the Raspberry Pi 5 could've offered better gaming performance if the SoC was a bit more powerful.

On the bright side, the SBC was able to run older titles like Doom 3 from 2004 and SuperTuxKart from 2007 in 4K at 60 FPS. Of course, this was only possible thanks to the Raspberry Pi 5 (starter kit available on Amazon) getting support for working RX 6000 and RX 7000 GPU drivers.

Beyond gaming, these new Radeon drivers also bring hardware video transcoding. However, the drivers still haven't brought support for LLM acceleration, and Geerling notes that AMD ROCm will not be coming to the ARM systems anytime soon. Gerlin has also tested other games, including Forza Horizon 4, Crysis Remastered, and Red Dead Redemption 2 on the setup. The Pi enthusiast has even tried out the setup with the Radeon Pro W7700. You can check out the results from the video attached below.
