Rare's Everwild is reportedly finally on track after serious setbacks including complete reboot
Since its debut with a short trailer at XO19 in November 2019, Everwild has captured the attention of gamers. Rare, known for games like Donkey Kong Country, Golden Eye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, and Sea of Thieves, has seemingly been developing Everwild since 2014.
Ten years later, aside from a few trailers that show the visuals and possible gameplay elements, we have no idea what Everwild is and neither did the studio at one point.
It now appears that Rare has finally figured out the recipe and Everwild is reportedly progressing well.
Everwild suffered a complete reboot a few years ago
The latest Everwild information comes to us courtesy of Windows Central’s Jez Corden who alleges that Everwild’s development is “going well” and the studio has “nailed the gameplay loop, and we should be seeing that in the future.”
Jez’s report is a big deal for fans who have been clamoring for updates on Rare’s new AAA IP. An undefined gameplay loop was possibly the biggest reason for Everwild to be in limbo. The problem was so severe that the game reportedly went through a full reboot in 2021 with a release date target set for 2024.
With 2024 on its way out, Xbox has revealed nothing about the Everwild’s release date. So, we can assume that the game is still not ready to be shown and it’d be a while before we get the full release.
Everwild gameplay details
While we know that Everwild is expected to be a third-person action-adventure game, we have no idea about Everwild’s gameplay. That said, we can draw a few conclusions judging from the title's 2020 trailer.
The game appears to be centered around the player’s connection with wildlife and plant life. For instance, the trailer shows the characters saving a tree from an insect attack by casting some sort of spell. In later shots, we also see them directing a giant animal to pull down a tree. There is also a scene where we see a ritual being performed to heal a deer-like creature by invoking a spirit.
From this, we can conjecture that the game could be thin on combat and revolve mainly around protecting wildlife and plants by performing rituals and summoning spirits.
That said, this is all pure speculation, and the release version of Everwild could have an entirely different gameplay loop. Whatever shape the gameplay takes, we hope Rare has indeed “nailed” it as Jez Corden has alleged.
