RPGs don't always need flashy graphics and action-packed combat to be enjoyable. To the Moon is proof of that – a classic pixel-art RPG with overwhelmingly positive Steam reviews that captivates players primarily through its emotional story.

In To the Moon, players follow two doctors, Rosalene and Watts, as they travel through the memories of dying patients and alter them so that their final wishes come true – at least in their minds. Their latest patient, Johnny, wants to go to the moon. Why this particular wish has stayed with him throughout his life is something the two doctors gradually uncover. The current 85% discount brings the regular price down from $8.75 to just $1.46 – a price that has been exceptionally rare in the past. According to SteamDB, the game last reached this price in November 2016, almost 10 years ago.

Players explore locations from Johnny's past, examine important objects and solve the occasional puzzle. There's virtually no combat in To the Moon. Instead, the game is driven almost entirely by its story, which revolves around the mystery behind Johnny's wish. The atmosphere is dark and melancholic, although the two doctors occasionally lighten the mood with their playful humor.

Since its release around 15 years ago, To the Moon has accumulated more than 85,000 Steam reviews, with an impressive 96% positive rating. Players particularly appreciate the presentation, believable characters, emotional moments and unconventional storytelling. After all, the story unfolds in reverse chronological order. However, the gameplay itself offers relatively little variety.

Exploring environments and tracking down important memories is occasionally interrupted by small puzzles and minigames. However, these mechanics remain fairly superficial and weren't particularly well received by critics. Although some reviewers, including GamePro and PC PowerPlay, awarded the game a perfect score of 100, To the Moon has a Metascore of 82. At around $1.50, though, it's certainly worth a look for RPG fans. The game is also playable on the Steam Deck.
