The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered came out last year, and reviews on Steam are mixed. That’s mostly due to performance issues and Bethesda not addressing them, but what if games could fix performance issues themselves?

An Xbox employee recently came under fire for his pro-AI comments. He claimed that AI in gaming is inevitable and that gamers need to accept that reality. Most people did not agree with his take, but a gamer has now shown what could be the best use case for AI in gaming – fixing performance issues.

LTSharpe, a The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered gamer who was experiencing performance issues on his AMD Ryzen 7 5800X + Radeon RX 9070 XT setup, decided to employ Claude AI. He used Claude Code to reverse engineer the code for the game and optimize it to remove inefficiencies, resulting in a claimed up to 40 percent performance improvement.

The creator explains in the GitHub post that by adjusting a DLL file, they were able to add about 40 fixes that produce “higher frame rates in towns and crowds, far fewer hitches while you travel, no long frame when you step out of a door, quicker menus,” and more. All this without changing how the game looks or plays, and without lowering any settings between the original performance and new performance.

The comparison video on YouTube shows higher frame rates and significantly lower stuttering at 4K. It also shows the game utilizing more of the CPU and delivering a more consistent gaming experience. The fix is available for everyone to download with instructions on installation.

This seems to be one of the positive uses of AI in gaming. If gamers are able to fix performance issues of a game without having to wait for the developer to release patches, that’s an impressive breakthrough. Of course, LTSharpe used a paid AI coder, and attempting something like this wouldn’t be possible with free AI assistants. Regardless, the gaming community could surely benefit from this kind of AI intervention.
