An Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 owner alleges that 16 GB of RAM went missing following a warranty motherboard replacement
An Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 owner alleges that their laptop returned from warranty repair with just 16 GB of its original 32 GB RAM. The missing memory was discovered following a motherboard replacement.

An Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 owner claims their gaming laptop was returned from warranty repair with half its RAM missing. The laptop was originally equipped with 32 GB of DDR5 memory, which dropped to 16 GB following a motherboard replacement. To make matters worse, the owner alleges that Asus customer support has been unwilling to acknowledge the missing memory despite repeated attempts.

User Thriceinabluemoon documented the incident on Reddit; they own a 2023 ROG Zephyrus G14 (GA402XY) with an AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS and GeForce RTX 4090. The Netherlands-based owner sent the laptop for repairs under an extended warranty. The motherboard was replaced, but the machine allegedly returned with only 16 GB of its original 32 GB RAM configuration.

It is important to note the 2023 Zephyrus G14 uses a somewhat unusual memory configuration. According to Asus’ official specifications, the GA402XY was available with 16 GB of DDR5 memory soldered to the motherboard and another 16 GB installed in a removable SO-DIMM slot. Because the repair involved replacing the motherboard, the technician would have needed to transfer the removable memory module to the replacement board. It is therefore possible that the additional RAM was simply overlooked during reassembly.

The owner, however, suspects something more sinister. They allege that the removable RAM module may have been stolen at the repair centre, although there is no evidence establishing theft. The Reddit post includes a photograph of the laptop’s BIOS showing 16 GB of installed memory, but no independently verifiable documentation of the machine’s configuration before the repair. The owner says they have already provided Asus with their purchase receipt and have spent several weeks trying to resolve the matter.

This isn’t the first time a gaming laptop has reportedly returned from warranty repair with half its RAM missing. Back in August, we covered a similar incident involving Best Buy, where a Lenovo Legion 5 owner received their laptop with 32 GB instead of the original 64 GB. In that case, Geek Squad deliberately removed a 32 GB module, citing Lenovo’s officially documented memory limit. The laptop had originally been sold through Best Buy by a third-party vendor with an upgraded 64 GB configuration, and repair documentation indicated that the removed module had been returned to the customer.

The latest Asus incident is slightly different because the manufacturer itself lists a 32 GB configuration for the affected model, and there is no confirmed explanation for the missing SO-DIMM. Whether this was an oversight during the motherboard replacement or something else remains unclear.
