Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, the studio behind Borderlands 4, has asked a peculiar question on X, sneakily suggesting that Borderlands 4 may get a PvP DLC or update at some point in the near future. His comment was quickly followed by "Be aware - you have no idea what the team and I were planning."

Borderlands 4 just launched, and although reviews have been mixed in its first week in the hands of gamers, there is still a lot of hype surrounding the latest instalment in the co-op looter-shooter series. While gamers are hopeful that upcoming patches will fix glaring performance issues, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, seems to have his eye set on goals further in the future.

In a recent post on social media platform X, Randy Pitchford asked for feedback regarding adding a field of view slider on consoles. What makes this interesting is that he specifically refers to how this might affect fairness.

"There's some dreams I have where an FOV setting might affect fairness. I can't really talk about it yet, but I see this is important to you so we're looking at it."

In a follow-up to that post, Pitchford goes on to clarify that no, his comments in no way leak what we think they do, suggesting he realised that he might have shown his hand with his initial post.

Be aware - you have no idea what the team and I were planning and how an FOV slider might affect fairness with such a thing.

Most of the commentary following Pitchford's poll has been complaining about the lack of an FOV slider, but there have been a few comments speculating about the possibility of a PvP mode. The most likely eventuality, if a PvP mode is on the table, is something similar to the Arms Race battle royale game mode that was introduced to Borderlands 3 in the Designer's Cut edition of the game. While Borderlands 4 doesn't have any PvP mode currently, it is designed primarily as a multiplayer experience.

Previous Borderlands games have all had some sort of PvP mode, even if it was limited to duelling, so the lack of any PvP mode in Borderlands 4 is a strange omission. It's entirely possible that the Arms Race mode in Borderlands 3 Designer's Cut was intended to be in that game from the start but didn't end up making it due to budget and scope constraints. Gearbox has previously been open about the fact that some features would be added to Borderlands 4 in post-launch updates, and a PvP multiplayer mode may just be one such feature.

It should be noted that there is no mention of a PvP mode in the recently released endgame content roadmap for Borderlands 4, so this is all speculation.
