Dead Cells launched in 2018, and almost immediately rose to fame thanks to its fast-paced, challenging combat and excellent exploration and platforming mechanics. In Dead Cells, you possess a body to navigate ever-changing, winding corridors, battling tough foes, unlocking new abilities and spells, and looting gear to become stronger and eventually find an escape. As you fight your way through the mysterious castle, you will learn more about its occupants, its dark history, and your own predicament.
The roguelike gameplay elements mean that even in death, you carry over your special abilities that will help you navigate the castle more effectively and explore parts of the castle you couldn't previously access. While some of the challenge in Dead Cells is obviously linked to upgrades and the roguelike progression mechanics, much of the individual combat and navigation challenges are skills-based. While it's not quite the gruelling precision platforming of games like Super Meat Boy, there's a lot of rewarding mobility and platforming to be had.
Like many Metroidvania games, Dead Cells features pixel graphics with some charming effects and a highly atmospheric quality. The game features 15 different biomes, and each has its own aesthetic as well as unique enemies.
If you haven't tried Dead Cells or the Metroidvania genre yet, Dead Cells is a great place to start, thanks to its solid execution, high level of polish, and engaging progression. The developer behind Dead Cells is also constantly releasing new DLCs, collaborations, and updates that keep the fun going. For the duration of the 50%-off Steam deal, Dead Cells is just $12.49, and the sale will end on September 23.
Dead Cells reviews
Dead Cells has earned itself an "Overwhelmingly Positive" review rating on Steam, with a review score of 96% from over 170,000 reviews. The majority of the reviews praise Dead Cells for its fluid, responsive combat and mobility, high replayability, sound track, progression and mobility unlocks, and the way the game eases you into tougher boss fights and enemies.
Of course, not everything is positive, and Dead Cells can be frustrating if you don't like games with permadeath, but the threat of losing your progress in a run by dying can be a great motivator. On the positive side, Dead Cells also runs perfectly on handheld devices, like the Lenovo Legion Go S (curr. $649.99 on Amazon).
