The Asus ROG Strix XG27UCG is a 27-inch 4K IPS gaming monitor with dual-mode functionality. This allows the monitor to switch between a high-resolution, and a high-speed setting. Thanks to an ongoing sale, the monitor can now be bought with a $110 discount on Amazon.

Folks on the lookout for an affordable yet high-performance gaming monitor may have reason to celebrate. Courtesy of an ongoing sale on Amazon, the Asus ROG Strix XG27UCG 4K gaming monitor is now available for a record-low price of just $339 on the platform for a limited time.

4K at 160 Hz, or 1080p at 320 Hz: The ROG XG27UCG can do both

The ROG Strix XG27UCG sports dual-mode functionality, which allows the monitor to switch between a high-resolution and a high-refresh rate mode. To be precise, the gaming monitor can either output 4K at 160 Hz, or 1080p at a whopping 320 Hz.

Needless to say, 4K at 160 Hz will offer an excellent gaming experience for the vast majority of gamers, and those seeking a competitive edge will also find the 320 Hz quite useful at the cost of sharpness. Of course, the IPS panel being used simply cannot match the visuals or speed offered by OLEDs, but the performance is perfectly adequate considering the price.

Asus claims 95% coverage of the P3 color gamut, and a 1ms GtG response time. Folks who use the same monitor for gaming and productivity purposes might be pretty happy with the XG27UCG, switching between 4K at 160 Hz for desktop use, and 1080p at 320 Hz for gaming. PCGamer's review of the monitor paints a pretty positive picture, with no alarming drawbacks.

Interpolation woes, unimpressive I/O

However, it does appear that Asus does not utilize integer scaling for perfect mapping, which makes the desktop experience at 1080p somewhat blurry. In-game, however, this is not much of an issue. The peak brightness of 400 nits appears pretty standard for an IPS monitor in this price range, and the lack of any independent dimming zones will make HDR content far less appealing than its pricier siblings.

The I/O on offer is acceptable, including HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, and a USB-C port with power delivery. Unfortunately, the power delivery is limited to a paltry 15 watts, which makes it barely enough to keep thin and light laptops going. Power hungry performance laptops, on the other hand, will likely need to be plugged into a separate power source during longer sessions.

At its current all-time low price on Amazon, the Asus ROG Strix XG27UCG 4K gaming monitor is definitely a decent purchase for gamers who are on a budget. The dual-mode functionality is the cherry on top, granting a great experience to enthusiasts of speed, as well as visuals.
