REI Co-op has announced the Co-op Cycles Generation e electric bikes, with two models available: e1.1 and e1.2. The lifestyle pedelecs have been designed for running errands or commuting. Both Generation e-bikes weigh 54 lbs (~24.5 kg) and can assist you at speeds up to 20 mph (~32 kph).
REI bills the new products as low maintenance, with a reliable motor and puncture-protected tires. Generation e.1.1 has up to 40 miles (~ 64km) of range from a 36 V Bafang removable battery with a built-in rear rack. Generation e1.2 has a slightly longer range at 50 miles (~80 km) from a 48 V battery. This model has both front and rear racks with a cargo-capable rigid fork.
There are five modes available, and a Bafang display shows you information such as the battery level and your speed. The bikes have headlights and rear lights to help you see and be seen, and a memory foam saddles make your ride more comfortable. The pedelec has a functional design with 20-in wheels, a low step-through frame, and a Shimano 7-speed drivetrain.
REI members have early access to the Co-op Cycles Generation e electric bikes until September 1, when they will go on general sale. Generation 1.1e costs US$1,499, and Generation e1.2 retails for US$1,899.
