Qualcomm and Meta are among the biggest tech companies that have overtly and whole-heartedly thrown their weight behind what they clearly perceive as the 'rise of the metaverse'; therefore, it follows somewhat naturally that they would collaborate on the hardware on which this trend is dependent.
In fact, the <strike>Oculus Quest 2</strike> Meta Quest 2 is a headset powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Platform. Now, the 2 companies have announced that its successors will have more of the same over the next few years, albeit with the potential for more and more variation along the way.
Qualcomm has revealed that future Quest-brand hardware will be based on the corresponding generations of its XR line-up, although the chipsets in question will be specifically customized to Meta's specifications. This collaboration will, according to Mark Zuckerberg, will be tailor-made for the "novel, multi-dimensional challenges in spatial computing, cost, and form factor" required for next-gen VR or AR experiences.
Qualcomm's CEO Cristiano Amon also asserts that these future Snapdragon XR platforms with in-house Meta tuning will "deliver best-in-class devices and experiences to transform how we work, play, learn, create and connect in a fully realized metaverse”. The agreement necessary has officially been confirmed as signed at IFA 2022, and will be in effect over an unspecified number of years going forward.
