Quest 2: Meta announces US$100 price increase for ageing VR headset amid Meta Quest 2 re-brand
Earlier this month, Meta confirmed that people would no longer need a Facebook account to log in to its VR headsets, a requirement since 2020. According to the company, Meta accounts will be available from next month. Oculus account users will have until January 1, 2023, to migrate to Meta accounts. Conversely, Facebook account users must create a Meta account in August for continued VR headset use.
If that was not confusing enough, Meta has now raised the price of the Quest 2 from US$299 to US$399. With the Quest Pro expected to launch for US$1,500, it seems that Meta intends to continue selling the Quest 2 until it is ready to release a Quest 3. In a blog post, Meta explains that its price change will take effect on August 1, with the 256 GB model also rising, but to US$499. Incidentally, Meta will re-brand the headset as the Meta Quest 2, with the Oculus name switched out for a Meta logo.
Worse still, Meta is increasing the prices of Quest 2 accessories and refurbished units. As a consolation, Meta will bundle a copy of Beta Saber with new Quest 2 purchases, but only until December 31, 2022. Currently, Beta Saber costs US$29.99 in the US.
