Potential Xperia foldable smartphone clue offers new details about the rumored compact clamshell phone
Sony still hasn’t jumped into the foldable arena yet, which is hardly a surprise considering the company’s current approach to the smartphone market – make wonderful devices and slap enormous price tags on them. The firm has previously been rumored to be developing a foldable or flip phone that would apparently come without a second screen and be of a pocketable size. Now, a smattering of information provided by RGcloudS could point to Sony moving forward with a compact Xperia clamshell phone.
According to the tipster, this latest “flip competitor” has a display size of 7 inches, a 21:9 screen ratio, and a 4K resolution. With Sony being noted for its Xperia devices with their 4K displays, it makes sense that some have come to the conclusion that this new competition is a foldable Xperia of some kind. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 has a reported display size of 6.7 inches, so this clamshell phone is actually even more compact, but then Sony has an interesting definition of that word anyway. This also presumes that 7 inches refers to the size when the phone is in its open state.
Sony likes to utilize a 21:9 aspect ratio for its Xperia smartphones, so it seems acceptable that the company would want to implement this for any kind of foldable or flip phone it was developing. It’s still something of a mystery, especially with the word “compact” having been used in connection with this Xperia foldable, although in a closed state it would certainly be pocket-friendly. What can be said for sure, though, is that if Sony does enter this particularly high-end sector of the smartphone market with an Xperia Fold, Flip, Flex, etc., the device would have a flipping high price tag.
