Portable wind turbine as an alternative to photovoltaics is successfully funded

Photovoltaics are very popular, also for off-grid applications and camping. But what happens when the sun isn't shining? A new portable wind turbine aims to solve this problem.

With the emergence of high-performance photovoltaic panels and affordable power storage, for the first time, people no longer necessarily had to worry about their power supply even far away from the public grid. However, there is not always enough solar energy available to operate the desired devices, let alone to charge batteries for the night. This can be extremely inconvenient when camping, on an RV trip, or while hiking. A new wind turbine, currently seeking backers on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, is set to solve this problem now.

The idea seems to be well-received, as more than fifteen times the funding goal was contributed to the project in less than 24 hours. Admittedly, at $1,500, this goal was not set particularly high.

Features and Specifications

Specifically, it is a portable wind turbine that is supposed to be easy to transport, weighing in at 2.2 lb. This is also aided by the fact that it can be packed down so small that it can even be carried in a backpack. Power generation starts at a wind speed of just 3 m/s, which is around 6.7 mph. In light winds, an output of around 10 watts is possible; in strong winds, 50 watts; and for short periods, such as during strong gusts, the turbine delivers up to 75 watts of power.

Of course, these are not values that can power an entire house, but that is not the intended area of application anyway. Rather, it can be used to charge smartphones, tablets, cameras, power banks, laptops, and the like, even if there is no access to the public power grid or if it has failed. These devices are connected via the directly included "Power Hub," which features one USB-A and one USB-C port each.

Price & Availability

At the current time, the device cannot be ordered via a traditional online shop, but is in the project funding stage on Kickstarter. Interesting projects are often found on this platform (we reported on some here and here), but at the same time, supporting a project this way always involves a certain level of risk. From changed specifications to simply no delivery at all, anything is theoretically possible here.

However, those willing to take this risk are slated to receive the complete set - consisting of the wind turbine, stand and mounts, carrying bag, cables, and Power Hub - for $159. Later in the campaign, the price is scheduled to increase to $189, and the final retail price after funding is expected to be $300. Shipping is slated to begin in December 2026.

Personal Opinion

In my view, the idea behind the wind turbine is very good, as the device could solve the problem of off-grid energy supply very comfortably, at least for smartphones and the like. Nevertheless, I would not invest in the project for several reasons:

On the one hand, this is the first product from Vertyra, which makes the risk of them failing to meet delivery promises significantly higher. On the other hand, when asked by another Kickstarter user, the company stated that the turbine has no official IP certification. While it is designed for outdoor use, it is best dismantled when it rains. The Power Hub and the cable connections must also be kept dry. For a wind turbine, that is rather suboptimal.

In addition to the actual device, the scope of delivery also includes items such as a carrying bag and mounts.
